Review

''And now, in the wake of Perry's breakthrough, an excellent new book from Black Dog Publishing called 'Breaking the Mould' sheds some welcome light on the small army of ceramicists who are following in his slipstream, making art that is every bit as meaningful and every bit as "fine" as that produced by the so-called fine artists.'' --The Scotsman

''This book certainly shows the versatility of clay as a material ... An interesting and enlightening read and a book to educate those who think pottery is just about playing with mud.'' --Midlands Potters' Association Newsletter

Product Description

Breaking The Mould: New Approaches to Ceramics is an astonishing collection of the most exciting ceramic design today, exploring the increasingly varied ways in which the boundaries of pottery design are being extended and challenged by contemporary makers. The potential of the medium is enormous. Its malleability means that the form is open to an infinite range of interpretations. From large-scale installation to sculpture to new configurations of the vessel, artists and makers are becoming ever more daring with their concepts and creations. Breaking the Mould showcases an impressive international array of makers and designers, from emerging talents to established figures. Over 60 ceramicists including Grayson Perry, Anders Ruhwald, Richard Slee, Phoebe Cummings, Maxim Velcovsky and Emmanuel Cooper are profiled, and their work is illustrated in luxurious full colour. The book also includes three essays by prolific ceramic artists. Rob Barnard looks at the history and current practices in ceramics in the United States, Natasha Daintry discusses the concepts of form and formlessness in the vessel and Clare Twomey explores the absolute cutting edge of the medium, examining its interaction with design and fine art. Breaking the Mould is a definitive overview of a craft scene that is simultaneously building upon and breaking with its roots, and in doing so creating a brave new future for itself.

First Sentence
When you think of the word 'vessel', a vase or urn-like pot probably springs to mind, the sort used on those brown and white council signposts in Stoke-on-Trent, which tell you that you are in 'pottery land' and the Wedgwood Museum is getting closer. Read the first page

This book is the ultimate ceramic coffee table book. It's something for ceramic students to drool over. The theme is where ceramic art meets fine art by breaking down boundaries of medium and showing how many ceramic artists are shoulder to shoulder with fine artists.

Good overview, 30 Jun 2008
Good introduction to contemporary ceramic scene, if a little limited in its content.
Beautifully illustrated and written.

This is basically a coffee table book as an introduction to ceramic artists. I found the information on each artist limiting as i was writing a dissertation, but if i was to delve into it for a purely research into different types of ceramics or seeking eye candy inspiration then this would be the book i would choose.
