Product Description

Product Description

In this completely revised, enlarged and updated edition of Sallie Walrond's classic work, a new series of step-by-step colour photographs, taken especially for the book by talented equestrian photographer Anthony Reynolds, take the reader, through basic lungeing and bitting techniques, show the correct way to introduce both harness and vehicle and demonstrate, by means of the author's own tried and tested methods, the way to produce an animal who will go willingly and happily in harness. Safety is a priority at every stage and training for road work is included. The author's lucid, easy-to-follow text provides all the necessary information to enable any averagely competent rider to train a horse to go in harness with success whether the animal concerned is an unbroken two year old or an outgrown family pony.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous work for both beginner and experienced hand., 5 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Breaking a Horse to Harness: Step-by-step Guide (Hardcover)
As a beginner in the sport of carriage driving, I read Sallie Walrond's "Breaking A Horse To Harness" with the trepidation of the new hand. Pleasingly, there was no need for concern as throughout the book Sallie describes in wonderful detail each stage of the training process. This is the only book on the subject I have found that explains, in depth, each process required to build a horse up to be confident in harness. I have applied Sallie's techniques and find I get the results she writes about. Right down to the smallest detail, such as having a friendly voice in a vehicle beside the horse when getting it accustomed to the road, she covers every element of the harness training process. A wonderful read that can be referred back to even when one has years of experience under the belt.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is a good guide to breaking a horse to harness, 12 Mar 2001

This review is from: Breaking a Horse to Harness: Step-by-step Guide (Hardcover)
I used this book as a guide when I broke my horse to drive. I had never broken a horse to harness before and this book really helped me as it takes you through the steps. From advice on harness, bits and vehicles to lunging, long reining, putting to and driving on the road.

3.0 out of 5 stars Driving, 10 Oct 2010
This review is from: Breaking a Horse to Harness: Step-by-step Guide (Hardcover)
I have had no experience with driving in the past so found this book useful however it could have been better and could have had more basic info. I had to buy another book to find out how to tack up properly but having said that I did get a lot of info from it. I feel that this book was written for people who have a basic knowledge already and is not really for the beginner.
