Biography

The only vocalist in history to net Grammy Awards in three different categories (jazz, pop, and R&B, respectively), Al Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, WI, on March 12, 1940. The son of a vicar, he earned his first performing experience singing in the church choir. After receiving his master's degree in psychology, Jarreau pursued a career as a social worker, but eventually he decided to ... Read more in Amazon's Al Jarreau Store

BBC Review

Released in 1981, Al Jarreau's seventh album entitled Breakin' Away found him bringing his scat singing and remarkable ability to imitate various instruments to a wider audience with his novel mixture of jazz and R&B influenced pop songs.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jarreau was singing at his local church from a young age, and after graduating with a degree in Psychology in 1962, he continued to sing in his spare time whilst working as a rehabilitation counsellor. Performing in various clubs in San Francisco and LA, Jarreau's reputation as a remarkable vocal talent began to grow within the jazz scene, and in 1975 Warner Brothers Records signed him.

Breakin' Away was Al Jarreau's forth and most successful album with Warner, both artistically and commercially. The album featured the hit singles We're In This Love Together and Roof Garden and earned Jarreau two Grammy Awards at the 1982 ceremony, for Best Male Pop Vocalist & Best Male Jazz Vocal Performance. Since then Jarreau has gone on to be the only vocalist to ever win in three separate categories, which goes to show the ability and versatility Al Jarreau has as a performer. --David O'Donnell

In the late-1970s, Warner Brothers managed to break George Benson out of the jazz market and into the pop realm, and obviously then fancied doing the same with Al Jarreau. Teaming Al with Jay Graydon, who had already produced a couple of hits with George ("Turn Your Love Around" and "Never Give Up On A Good Thing"), proved to be the masterstroke. Their initial teaming, This Time, was well-received, but on Breaking Away everything clicked and a platinum Grammy-nominated album was born. Combining smooth jazz arrangements with slightly more accessible R and B/pop material was irresistible. The single, "We're In This Love Together" is cool and catchy and proved a well-desered hit, but is more than matched by the rest of the material. The opener, "Closer To You Love" is more uptempo and stylish, while "Roof Garden" is funk-jazz and a real gem. As all great albums, though, the best is saved for last - the gentle, smooth arrangement of "Teach Me Tonight" glides along effortlessly until the last verse when Al lets go and soars, matched by the arrangement and the wonderful sax climax. Awesome. This is an essential part of any real music lovers collection. Check out the follow up too, Jarreau, which I think is even better!
