Book Description

24 Nov 2011

When Darcy McCall loses her beloved Aunt Molly, she doesn't expect any sort of inheritance - let alone a small island! Located off the west coast of Ireland, Tara hasn't been lived on for years, but according to Molly's will, Darcy must stay there for twelve months in order to fully inherit. It's a big shock. And she's even more shocked to hear that she needs to persuade a village full of people to settle there, too.

Darcy has to leave behind her independent city life and swap stylish heels for muddy wellies. Between sorting everything from the plumbing to the pub, Darcy meets confident, charming Conor and sensible, stubborn Dermot - but who will make her feel really at home?

5.0 out of 5 stars I was hooked 23 Nov 2011
By DizzyC
Format:Paperback
Darcy McCall is a city girl working for a fashion publication when she is given the challenge by way of her Aunt Molly's last will and testament. She is to live on a remote island off Ireland for a whole year to inherit her Aunt's estate. Not only that, she has to convince 14 other people to come and live there too.

This seems like a failure from the off, as Darcy is more used to busy city life, high heels, designer clothes, makeup and wine bars. How could she possibly survive on a remote, deserted island for a week let alone a year.

This is a very believable story and Ali McNamara has covered all the 'what ifs' that may come to mind about such a task.
I was hooked by the challenge Darcy faced right away. I wanted her to love the island as much as her Aunt Molly and see past the inheritance at the end of the task. I wanted to see how or if she would adapt to the sudden changes in her lifestyle.

The strong cast of characters, that joined Darcy on the island, were introduced into the story so that it was easy to get to know them. I would love to hear more about this community.

The island and it's history, myths and legends played a major part in shaping the future of the islanders and as a fan of historical fiction I was pleased to see the author go into this in detail.

With some surprises and a shocking twist, I needed the tissues by the end of the novel which was all too soon.

5 out of 5 for me!

2.0 out of 5 stars Was okay.. could've been so much better 29 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
Picked this up having great anticipation for the adventure on the island Tara that was mentioned in the blurb. However, the book wasn't written in enough detail of the beautiful landscape that would surround such an island and it just seemed a book that was more suited to teenagers in general because there wasn't enough depth. It was also rather predictable and the main character wasn't realistic or likeable enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mmm, passable reading. 22 Dec 2012
By Joanne D'Arcy TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Darcy inherits an island, when her Aunt Molly passes away. However it is not that simple and there are conditions to this bequest. Darcy must create a community on the island of Tara, off the coast of Ireland and live there for a year.

Darcy is a city girl, so life on an island is going to be a huge cultural shock. Leaving everything she knows and everyone she knows behind. Although her even more citified friend Roxi joins her, everyone else does not know each other. They all now have to get on and relationships and friendships are formed, lost and re won as the year passes on Tara.

This has the formula of a rather good plot, however it is not as strong as it could have been. Too much was predictable, you could see where most relationships were going to end up. You had the man with the glint in his eye who was always going to break hearts and the mean moody one who is simply misunderstood. Then there was the solicitor and the handyman, the shop girl and the builder. It was just too much the same.

For me it's strengths lie in the descriptions of the scenery, the weather how it changes so suddenly and how it impacts on them all and the local folklore which seems to go with most island communities. It is that which kept me reading.

I was disappointed with this novel, but for me much better than her debut book, that said I do not think I will be seeking out her third.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable enough, but very far-fetched!
This book was okay - I read to the end, which I often won't do - but it had some definite negatives:

1) The plot - from start to finish - was just too far-fetched. Read more
