Product Description

Product Description

Rob Grafton and Louise Bright are in love and engaged to be married. When they unexpectedly find themselves unemployed, marriage plans are derailed and they are forced to rethink the direction of their lives. While Louise turns to school, Rob maintains a staunch desire to regain his old job, but when the company is itself shut down and hope is lost, Rob's depression not only keeps him from finding another job, but ends up repelling Louise, as well. Set in contemporary England, Breakfast After Noon is a unique comic-book treat, choosing to focus on the twists and turns of real life rather than convoluted plots or the smoke-and-mirrors of the fantastic.

Format:Paperback
Rob and Louise are a fairly typical English couple, living together, making plans for their wedding, when one day, without warning, they are both laid off from their jobs at the potteries. Lousie takes this as a blessing, using the opportunity to return to her education and learn a new trade, while Rob finds it a lot harder to let go. Rob has worked in the assembly depatment of the potteries since leaving school, and he cannot find the motivation to look for work in a new trade. So he signs on the doll.

With too much spare time on his hands and not enough money to make ends meet, tensions rise between the couple and their marriage plans are threatened. Rob's mates begin to get fed up with him scrounging pints off them at the pub, and eventually sever ties with him.

This is Andi Watson's strongest work to date, the characters are instantly recognisable and likeable. This a touching, funny and uplifting work of graphic fiction, focusing on the ups and downs of everyday life, and is a good example of the diversity of genre currently available in the comics medium. Watson's linework and dialogue are excellent - this is a really compelling read.

The comic for non-comics readers 26 Mar 2003
By Jason C. Harris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
For fans of graphic novels, comics and sequential art, Andi Watson is the real-deal. His use of line, texture and brushstrokes evokes a masterly touch in a medium frequently given to assembly line product and connect-the-dot plotting. One look thru his great graphic novel, "Breakfast After Noon" will make you a fan of his art. Luckily, those that buy the book and read it will also become a fan of Andi the writer.

His stories have that lived-in feeling and his characters eminate from real life in a way that is all too rare in today's spandex-obseesed comics market. BAN is a particularly English story, sprinkled as it is the British slang and set in an English town reeling from the closing of a local manufacturing plant. The couple caught in the center of the story could be friends of yours, but Watson makes them distinct individuals with their own agendas and desires. This is a slice-of-life story with no urgent plotting or climatic ending. But that doesn't mean that BAN is without suspense or dramatic purpose, but it achieves its meaning and resonance thru character instead of external plot machinations, which is refreshing in a medium so often over-written.

And Andi's art is a true treasure, and the best part is he keeps getting better with each subsequent series. He's done other excellent work and has a new series coming out for ONI Press where he plans on putting his own unique twist on the world of superheroes.

BAN is the comic you can read and feel confident passing along to your non-comics reading friend. It's a great book by a great artist.

Suddenly It's Over 26 Jan 2009
By A. Spieldenner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Breakfast After Noon is a sweet surprise in comics. Two people have decided to spend forever together, and then it all changes. They each find themselves doing unexpected things and drifting apart. Will their bond be enough as their lives seem to move apart?

Andi Watson's work is character driven. It's comics that work over a good cup of coffee. The images are simple and move easily across the pages. Watson takes advantage of the comics medium well -- his words and pictures are intertwined and move the narrative. The characters are distinctive, the emotions and action are clear. By the time I was mid-way through, I realized I was growing fonder of this struggling pair and hoped they would recognize what they could have together.

But that's a little like life, right? All these other factors interfere and push us apart, even when we know we could be better together. And then it's over, before we jump at the chance.
