Review

“Julia’s new teenage novel, Breakers, is a cracking read.”
Sunday Post

“Unsentimental, gritty and funny, there's only one possible result: Teenagers 1, Parents 0.”
achuka

“The writing is excellent, and this is storytelling at is most assured – confident, well-crafted and very convincing.”
Independent

“A delightful novel about a girl forced to be the grown-up in her family. Cat looks after her chaotic, vulnerable younger sister, Ana, and her actress mother, who will be an adolescent all her life: beautiful, feckless, with a messy sex-life. Clarke has a feeling for what it is to be at the mercy of adults while trying to discover a life for yourself. She is an attractive, sensitive writer; this novel can be polished off in a single sitting.”
The Observer (2/6/02)

“A heroine to love wholeheartedly and leave reluctantly, the creation of a gifted writer.”
Jan Mark, Carousel (21)

Praise for Julia’s first book, THE STARLING TREE:

"… a real find. Enormously affecting, it takes you straight to the emotional vortex of teenage life and the anguish of unrequited longing"
The Guardian

“Julia Clarke is a welcome new voice in teenage fiction”

Product Description

Cat’s life is in turmoil. Uprooted from London, she and her sister Ana must adapt to life by the sea in Yorkshire. Will Ana survive the bullies? Will posh boy Sebastian drive Cat mad?

When Cat's mother's latest relationship breaks down, she moves her family to Yorkshire. But adapting to life by the sea is difficult for Cat and her sister Ana. Cat feels responsible for her sister – particularly when the bullying starts. But she has her own life to sort out too. Sebastian, the posh boy down the road, seems interested in her – but Cat suspects his motives. It's the last straw when she realises that Ana's chief tormentor is Seb's sister. Can she see through the complex layers of her life, and feel settled at last?

Absorbing 13 Nov 2002
Format:Paperback
Breakers is a great read. When I picked it up and started reading, I was completely absorbed by Cat's problems, anger, confusion and general frustration with her family and the people around her. I cried, smiled and laughed with her. You can really put yourself in the character's shoes thanks to Julia Clarke's terrifically descriptive writing.
The book tells of the trials and tribulations of Cat's new life by the sea in Yorkshire, after Cat and her sister, Ana are taken from the city by their mother, Bianca, an actress. Cat finds her new life difficult, dealing with not only her own battles with her mother and the new people she meets but with her sisters life too.
After reading this book I went out and bought all the other Julia Clarke books I could find and enjoyed every single minute of them.
