Biography

Anna Mae Bullock was born in Tennessee, but moved to St. Louis as a teenager. There she met rock and roll performer Ike Turner and persuaded him to let her join his backing vocalists. Eventually Anna impressed Ike so much that he gave her equal-billing, and the new name "Tina". They became the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, and married in 1962. Through the 60s they forged a reputation as a thrilling… Read more in Amazon's Tina Turner Store

After her breathtaking comeback solo album, 'Private Dancer' rocketed Tina to the highest heights of super stardom in 1984 the follow up album 'Break Every Rule' (1986) sadly seems to be overlooked by anyone who isn't a fan, basically because it wasn't better than 'Private Dancer' just similar. But paradoxically it is very different from 'Private Dancer' because, Tina has swapped raw energy and eclectic songs for a more sophisticated approach, which rather contrasts with the popular image of Tina as the raunchy and rough edged rock and roll queen. However in my opinion 'Break Every Rule' is a phenomenal album, opening at a break neck pace with the dazzling 'Typical Male' followed swiftly by the uplifting and strangely witty hard rock and roll of 'What You Get Is What You See'. Then the listener is put into a melancholy mood with beautiful songs like 'Afterglow' 'Girls' and 'Two People' the last two show the staggering range of Tina's voice as she reaches probably the highest, loudest and longest notes ever in her career! Hidden away in the middle of the album is the title track which is strangely quite a low key affair compared to the other songs on the album, but its still a fun love song with a chorus you cannot resist singing along to! Then the album closes with probably two of the best songs she has ever sung 'Paradise Is Here' could almost move you to tears with its thoughtful lyrics and Tina's fervent performance and then the listener is totally smacked in the face with the utterly mindblowing 'I'll Be Thunder' which has an epic quality to it luckily it contains no storm sound effects whatsoever but still sounds like a thunderstorm, conjuring images of great tidal waves crashing onto immense rocks, and most of this comes from the natural raw energy of Tina's voice, in this song she sounds like some kind of Roman goddess of weather and you really believe she could be thunder! 'Wildest Dreams' which Tina released in 1996 is quite similar in its sophistication and down right cockiness! It may seem odd, but maybe the songs on 'Break Every Rule' are too good to be the great chart toppers like 'The Best' and 'What's Love Got to Do With It?', because the general public just want fun sing-along pop songs, which luckily Tina can belt out with great gusto just as well. My advice is, have a lie down after listening to 'Break Every Rule' you'll need it, it's fantastic!

Well She did break every rule What a come back,
After the success of her Private dancer album/ This break every rule album is a little left behind.simply because of the success of her first
From the opening bars on this album you can see why Tina is such a ledgend she can scorch her way with volcanic vocals then flutter down to mellow warm sounds .AFTERGLOW is a great example great music.lyrics. and Who could sing that with such feeling and warmth
Great album LONG LIVE TINA
