Product Description

All the episodes from the third and fourth series written by Carla Lane. The Boswells (Nelly, Joey, Jack, Adrian, Billy, Aveline and Freddie) live in Liverpool and are very adept at scamming the system. Nelly (Jean Boht) rules the nest and puts up with no nonsense from her children or long-suffering husband, Freddie.

This release contains all content from Series 3 and Series 4 of Bread. The two series were contracted separately as individual series, however they were broadcast concurrently over a continuous period of 13 weeks.

Product Description

Welcome to Liverpool at the height of Thatcher's reign, where you had to be resourceful to survive. Just like the Boswells. They always knew how to work the system. And in the centre of this large Catholic family is matriarch Nellie Boswell (Jean Boht), surrounded by her sons Joey, Jack, Adrian and Billy and daughter Aveline, while her husband Freddie is rarely to be seen. With Grandad next door, Billy's Julie and their Francesca over the road and "that tart" Lilo Lil always in the background, life is always full. This release features every episode from Series Three and Four of Carla Lane's Bread.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great - even if it is a series missing 28 Dec 2008
Format:DVD
The Boswells are back up to their scullduggery and extracting every penny they can from the DSS (in those days DHSS). The head of the family, staunch Catholic mother, Nellie Boswell, with her 5 children, the super cool, leather clad Joey with a mobile phone the size of a house, our Jack the antiques dealer ducking and diving and, not always successful, wheeler dealing, our Aveline and her modelling, our Adrian the redundant estate agent and our "I'm not ready for all this" Billy with his wife, Julie, and baby, Francesca, and his clapped out VW Beatle.

Peter Howitt, long before he wrote/directed Sliding Doors and several other Hollywood hits, is by far the best Joey, the series definitely lost a lot when him and Gilly Coman (the original Aveline) left. Yes, this is actually not what it says on the box, it's only series 3 but it's hillariously funny as ever it was and, for me, that's what matters. Let's hope Playback sort themselves out and release series 4-7 sometime soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful !!! 19 Aug 2003
By HH
Format:VHS Tape
I simply love these shows - I watched them on tv a few years back and when I stumbled across them at amazon I just had to buy them ! And although they are almost twenty years old they age really well, it's not only that they are funny - which they definetly are - they are also very warm and while watching you feel that the Boswell's are a family you really would like to be a part of. I mean, they are all disfunctional in one way ore another - but very human and one can relate to them and their problems. These are shows you can watch over and over again - - or in the words of Adrian's girlfriend Carmen : "WONDERFUL."!!
My favourites are the parts which take place at the DHSS - and it's also very exciting to watsh the development of Nellies relationship with her estranged husband, Freddie.
A must-see !!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mistake 29 April 2007
Format:DVD
If this actually was series 3 and 4 like it says on the box then this would definatly get five stars. However it is only series 3. There are no series 4 episodes on this at all. However, this also means that they can no longer bring out any more series because they would have to lie about what series it was. For instance, if they were to continue the two series per DVD thing, then series 4 would become the complete series 5 and 6, series 5 would be series 7 and 8. And there was only 7 series to begin with.

Why didn't they just put the complete series 3 on the box instead and then release series 4, 5, 6 and 7. Im sure it would have been much more appreciated (Pardon my spelling)

5.0 out of 5 stars What a rip off 9 April 2008
Format:DVD
I too purchased this dvd thinking that this was the complete series 3 and 4 . I found it odd that the cover write up did not match the shows ,in the fact that the daughter marries a vicar much to the consternation of the mother . I just thought that this was a " typo " but now having read the other reviews I am " in the moering " as we say in South Africa . Having said that ,the dvd is fantastic .

4.0 out of 5 stars good - but not excellent 11 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Not quite as good as the first one - but kind of grows on you. Had a hard time coming to terms with the new Julie though. And the ups and down in Nellie's and Freddie's relationship are becoming a bit tiresome. Still it has it's moments - when Freddie goes to court and when Jack gets really paranoid about his health. And the episode where all the Boswells decide to get jobs ! is really great. And the characters are of course excellent as ever. So, in the whole - well worth watching but the plot could use a bit of shaking up.

4.0 out of 5 stars What the... 19 Feb 2008
Format:DVD
I am also incensed that the advertised series 3 and 4 is only series 3. It is such a good, funny series, it is a shame that people are being misled when they are buying the DVD.
