Russell Hoban has a knack of writing witty amusing books that are as much a joy for the parents as the children. Both our chidren (eight and five) love his books for the humour and the strong character of Frances that comes through each one.
In each book Frances goes through an experience and emerges a wiser (what? racoon? badger? person?) girl the other side. This may sound preachy, but it isn't, mostly due to the skill with which Frances is drawn.
In this book we are introduced to the problem of faddish eating, and see how Frances triumphs in the end. The song about jam which goes through the story is delightful.

I read 'Bread and Jam for Frances' when I was at primary school and it's stayed in my memory ever since. The illustrations are beautiful, the story is funny but with a message too - that variety is important. One of the best things, though, is Frances' rhymes about food...really worth reading.

I had this as a child and have introduced my own daughter to it. It is a funny and sweet book that adults will enjoy as much as children. The moral of eating lots of different things doesn't appear to have impacted on my children yet but I live in hope.

Frances the cheeky raccoon is such a picky eater that she won't touch anything but bread and jam. Her wise and loving mother solves the problem by serving her nothing else for breakfast, dinner and tea while the others enjoy all kinds of delicious foods. Finally she feels she is missing out, and of her own volition, starts to try - and enjoy - a more varied diet. Garth Williams' charming illustrations perfectly complement the lively little raccoon's personality. All little girls will relate to her as her character and little songs and thoughts are perfectly on their level. Beginning readers will find they want to read right to the end of the book to find out what happens in the end. An excellent story, as are all the Frances books.

This is a wonderful little story. I read it to my own children when they were small, and recently bought it for the fussy eater son of a friend (who loved it). It tells the tale of Frances, who refuses to eat anything but bread and jam. After a while, her mother decides to go along with this, and Frances is given bread and jam at every meal until she is begging to eat like the rest of the family! A cautionary tale, but fun, too, with delightful illustrations.
