Product Description

Product Description

Frances liked bread and jam. In fact, she liked it so much she had it for breakfast, lunch and supper too. And she was quite happy - until she began to wonder what she was missing. The author and illustrator also produced "Harvey's Hideout". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Russell Hoban has a knack of writing witty amusing books that are as much a joy for the parents as the children. Both our chidren (eight and five) love his books for the humour and the strong character of Frances that comes through each one.

In each book Frances goes through an experience and emerges a wiser (what? racoon? badger? person?) girl the other side. This may sound preachy, but it isn't, mostly due to the skill with which Frances is drawn.

In this book we are introduced to the problem of faddish eating, and see how Frances triumphs in the end. The song about jam which goes through the story is delightful.

Lots of fun 3 May 2004
Format:Hardcover
I read 'Bread and Jam for Frances' when I was at primary school and it's stayed in my memory ever since. The illustrations are beautiful, the story is funny but with a message too - that variety is important. One of the best things, though, is Frances' rhymes about food...really worth reading.

I had this as a child and have introduced my own daughter to it. It is a funny and sweet book that adults will enjoy as much as children. The moral of eating lots of different things doesn't appear to have impacted on my children yet but I live in hope.
