Sub-titled 'Tropicalia Psychedelic Masterpieces 1967-1976', this album contains 16 songs compiled from long forgotten Brazilian 7" singles by equally long forgotten artists. The detailed liner notes state that many of the singles these songs were taken from were promotional or test pressings; hence the music is indeed very obscure. The vast majority of the songs have a raw, hot-wired psychedelic vibe that almost makes Brazilian legends
Os Mutantes sound refined and polished in comparison.
Opener 'Tema De Batman' is a trippy and insane Brazilian take on the Batman theme - Batman goes into space - with crazy PA style vocals on the two minute intro. The Youngsters cover of The Beatles 'I Wanna Be Your Man' features a storming bass line and plenty of fuzz guitar and Marisa Rossi's 'Cinturao De Fogo' is full on Ye-Ye. Elsewhere, 'Som Imaginario De Jimmi Hendrix' by The Pops gives it's sound away in the song title and Piry's 'Heroi Moderno' is the closest thing to mainstream Tropicalia here. Closing song 'The Lantern' by Mac Rybell is the weakest song by some distance and sounds out of place - its just a note for note rendition of The Rolling Stones' original version.
Housed in a neat digipak with a very comprehensive 48 page booklet, it also contains a fairly interesting (but largely self-indulgent) 15 minute documentary detailing the making of the album. The music's running time is 47 minutes.
In the main, this is an enjoyable compilation. 3½ stars.
