Cool as a cucumber, 18 Jul 2005
This really is a very cool record. Songs here are sung in about 5 different languages, are delivered sexily and ice cool by the female singer, and above all are very dancable. Comparisons can be made to alternative dance acts like Moloko and Goldfrapp, but you'll also find some Bebel Gilberto, Cibelle and even a little Blondie too. If you liked the debut by Smoke City you'll like this - a lot! Elements of house music, Bossa Nova and Reggae are all pulled together with free spirited jazz like arrangements. It's the sort of sound that you could imagine being played in the background at some cool New York party , but unlike a lot of this type of music, it sits in the foreground very nicely too.

Songs for the summer of 2005, 28 Jun 2005
I had the good fortune to see this band live at the new location of the Amsterdam Bimhuis this weekend and my goodness they were something else! Think Bebel Gilberto, think Blondie, think Sugarcubes plus lyrics in five languages and you're getting at least some idea of what this band's all about. This is a band in rapid development. They mostly played songs from this excellent CD, but with doubled intensity. Still, if you turn up the volume you can start building your own summer party with them. Needless to say, there is not a Brazilian to be found among the four members of this New York band. With her sexy, sultry vocals, multilingual singer and lyricist Sabina Sciubba (born in Rome, raised in Germany and France) brings back memories of Françoise Hardy, while her weirdly punning lyrics crack you up from time to time too. The three guys (one Argentinian, two Americans) are a hard-hitting outfit with tight base lines and ditto drumming and some very creative keyboard sounds and laptop samples and beats by Didi Gutman. This is my summer disc for 2005, like Suba's Sao Paolo Confessions was for 2001. Listen to the samples and you'll hear what I mean. I certainly hope these guys - sorry, girls - will be back for a new tour next year and I am extremely curious what their next CD is going to be like. This record will be difficult to top, but as said, they are moving fast!

sexy, cosmopolitan, intelligent and cool without being pretentious. The Brazilian girls have to be one of the most talented set of musicians to emerge from New York for a while. thier mix of dance, jazz, electronica and world flavours is accessable to all.
