Product Description

At first glance Brazil appears to be an alluring playground of exciting carnivals, sultry samba, divine football and a vibrantly diverse people. But behind this dazzling facade lies a disturbing story of history s largest-ever slave population. Astonishingly Brazil, a Portuguese colony, received ten-times more African slaves than the numbers transported to North America. This programme looks at those estimated 4 million people with whose blood, sweat and tears Brazil was built. Without them none of Brazil s present-day success and appeal would exist. Using contemporary testimonies, this film takes a hard look at Brazil s dark history through the eyes of those slaves. They lived in squalid conditions on remote plantations or in teeming cities harbouring fatal diseases. Most Africans survived only seven years in this 'New World'. Some, however, did survive to create a new culture a fusion of African and European. This new ethnicity permeates and explains the modern Brazilian way of life. This outstanding film, winner of the Houston Film Festival Gold Award, is directed by Phil Grabsky. His film throws light on Brazil s inconvenient history .

I thought `Brazil: An Inconvenient History' was a great documentary that gave informative historic insight into an amazing country. It had a wide selection of contributors and a good mixture of contemporary scenes and archive images. What I found particularly interesting was that that the Portuguese settlers were more inclined to acknowledge the children they had with African slaves, some becoming heirs but mostly slaves. The mixture of indigenous, African and Portuguese culture has contributed in creating this racially mixed vibrant country however as the documentary illustrates a significant number of Brazil's inhabitants are poverty-stricken. If you have seen films like City of God and would like to know a bit more about the history of Brazil this is a great documentary to watch and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Brazilian Reality 2 Sep 2009
This is a very interesting historic documentary, which feature a reality of the past and present of Brazil.

Not many people inside and outside Brazil are aware of those terrible historic facts showed on this movie.

As a Brazilian and as an afro-Brazilian citizen, I am glad that someone had the interest of produce something that the whole Brazilian media and institutions are ashamed, embarrassed to talk about: what is the most cruel, brutal and long form of slavery in history, that was imposed by the Portuguese Slave makers on African people in Brazil.

Everything you will see on this documentary are facts that can be proved by several documents printed in Brazil, but not very well-known by the population with poor education.

Also, by watching this movie you will understand the social apartheid face by Black people in Brazil nowadays.
Brazil is a country where racism is a huge problem and Brazil is still the country number one in social inequality.

A real eye-opener 24 Jun 2009
By Sally
This film is a real eye-opener. I leant so much about Brazil from watching this film and the intriguing history is told in a really gripping, almost sinister way. It was really easy to take in the information given by the experts being interviewed - no stuffed shirts here! And there were loads of good images to illustrate the story - overall a damn good film.
