Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Braven 600 is the little brother to the Braven 650 but, seemingly, in only one way: a much reduced battery life down from a huge 20 hours, to a reasonable 12, all for thirty quid difference. As such, most of the next review is the same for the 650, just because in almost every respect they're the same product.

I already have a portable speaker, a cheap little thing that takes three triple As and connects via the headphone port. Predictably its not great sounding and the power doesn't last long. Other portables I've had suffered from the same underpowered performance, sometimes drawing on a device's battery, which ends the fun really soon. What is needed is decent sound and battery life, which on both counts the Braven 600 provides.

First impressions are of a compact but solid and weighty, little unit, the size of a small packet of biscuits. The aluminium body has a minimalist design, which is little more than a metal cuboid, in a striking red colour, with black, plastic ends that contain the interfaces and controls. An initial four hour charge, after unboxing, and it is ready to be played with.

Connectivity is very simple via Bluetooth, press and hold the unit's connect button for five seconds, then search through your audio device's Bluetooth screen and connect. Super simple. I tried connection through two different Sony Xperias, a Samsung Galaxy s3 and an iPhone, all connected first time. Should this method not work (or you want to conserve your battery's power), you can connect easily through a 3.5mm audio cable.

Both the quality and volume of the audio are impressive, more than adequate for trips to the park but also able to fill a medium room easily.

This is a class act!

Basically it's a pair of speakers housed in an aircraft grade aluminum box which connects to either your mobile phone or tablet via Bluetooth or cable. If you don't have Bluetooth then you can connect your mobile/table using the standard 3.5mm jacks with the supplied cable. Obviously this may not be as convenient as no wires.

I've tried the Braven with both an Ipad and IPhone 4S. Bluetooth connection was very fast and very easy - basically the goodies do the business, no code required. The `box' can also be used to charge your mobile phone, this feature is probably more of a booster function though as they say it can't cope with charging a tablet. Handy though at a push. Bluetooth range seems to be about 2 metres or so before problems.

Sound seems very good both with a talking book and music. The music, both ballad and rock, came out sweet and with plenty of bass when required - for their size, and we isn't talking Wharfdale Linton's here, they seem excellent to these old ears.

Size of speaker box is 6 1/2" (16cm) long x 2 1/2" (6cm approx) high x 1 1/2" (4cm) wide. I'd guess they are only a few grams in weight, whatever, the Braven is very light. The Braven comes supplied with a small power unit and a selection of plug fittings which are easily attached. There is a standard UK 3 pin, one I think is for the American market and a couple of European ones, so no problems in finding one for wherever you might be going. There are also two short cables supplied, one for charging and one to connect the Braven to your mobile via the 3.5mm jack point if no Bluetooth is available.

The product description says that this is a portable wireless speaker, but that doesn't really do it justice. First of all, its small, neat, and looks good. Set up out of the box (once you can get the box open, which is well secured with invisible sticking tape) is easy - it paired straight away with both my iPod and phone. It plays music (off either) but the neat trick for me is that it works as a hands free phone; so, if like me you work from home and have to do conference calls, this is ideal. Apparently it will also hook up with a computer/laptop and run Skype as well in the same way.
Sound quality is good - it is only small but packs a good punch, not in the same league soundwise as the Bose or a Bowers Wilkins but acceptable. It has USB ports to help recharge aither an iPod or phone, and is a very versatile all rounder.

This is a gorgeous piece of kit that gives a great sound (perfect for annoying other people in the park!) and that's quite a surprise given how small this device is. It also works well as a Charlie's Angels style speakerphone, although as you might expect you will sound a little distant to the other party. Nevertheless, it would be very good for teleconferencing. I've been testing it with an iPhone 4, which is famous for not being so good when it comes to phone calls and for its short battery life. The Braven 600 helps with both of these. While there are cheaper solutions to the iPhone's poor battery, the ability to charge your phone is something you might use when stuck (and if you've been hammering your Bluetooth connection all day, that's more likely than not).
