5.0 out of 5 stars What to read after The Hunger Games... 22 May 2012
By sakura_b TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is a really great anthology and filled the gap in my life after I'd finished the Hunger Games. What's great is that they are all short stories, so *if* you don't like one you can skip to the next, and I've discovered so many amazing authors who I want to read more of. So my book pile is really big now!

They're all dystopian fiction with an element of romance - some straight, some gay, all stunning and each one completely original and different. To give you a taster, here are some of my favourites:

Kiera Cass - In the Clearing.
Mackenzie is kidnapped from her normal, safe city life by a bunch of outsiders who live in The Clearing, which seems to be a sort of secret hippy commune. I can't explain much more because it's one of those breathtaking plots where you're not quite sure what's happening at first, then the author delivers a real thumper and your mind is a little bit blown. It's completely gripping, and really great characters too.

Elizabeth Bear - The Salt Sea and the Sky.
A beautiful, tender and poignant glimpse of a moment in a young girl's life, as she decides whether to leave home and her girlfriend for the wider world and adventure. The landscape of a futuristic Ireland is gorgeously described.

Carrie Vaughn - Now Purple with Love's Wound.
When love is a drug you're injected with, to make you forever faithful to the stranger who chooses you, how can you prove to him that your love is real?

Diana Peterfreund - Foundlings.
In a society where your decision to have babies is made by a government board, in order to quash irresponsible parenting, a girl has to help her pregnant twin sister break free and escape the society that will punish her.

Anyway, that's as much as I'm going to give away! Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
