Product Description

Product Description

Hypertension is a very common health threat. It is the medical condition of having consistently high blood pressure. Blood pressure (BP) is the force that blood exerts on artery walls as it circulates through the body. Blood fills arteries to a certain capacity, like air in a tyre. If there is too much air, the air pressure can damage the tyre. In the same way, high blood pressure can damage arteries and lead to life-threatening diseases. A doctor must diagnose hypertension, but you can keep track of your blood pressure at home with a home blood pressure monitor. If the readings over a period of time are persistently above given limits, consult your doctor immediately.

Systolic and diastolic pressure
Blood pressure monitors give two readings: systolic and diastolic pressure. The values are expressed in millimetres of mercury (abbreviated mmHg). Most blood pressure monitors also show the heart rate. Systolic pressure is your maximum blood pressure. It represents the pressure on your arteries when your heart contracts and pumps blood into them. Diastolic pressure is your minimum blood pressure, which is recorded when your heart relaxes after contracting and draws blood back into its chambers.

According to the World Health Organisation, hypertension occurs when you have consistent readings of over 140/90 mmHg (this is read as “140 over 90″, where 140 is the systolic pressure and 90 is the diastolic pressure). It is also possible to have systolic hypertension or diastolic hypertension if only one of these levels is high.

Dangers of hypertension
If untreated, hypertension can lead to kidney failure, brain damage or heart attack. The most common ailments associated with hypertension are heart attacks and strokes. If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, be sure to follow your doctor’s treatment and continue with regular check-ups.

The European Society of Hypertension encourages people who suffer from high blood pressure to measure their blood pressure regularly at home. This improves patients’ adherence to treatment and provides more information on its effectiveness.
Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors (BPMs) are not recommended for those with weak pulses. They are recommended for those who are overweight/obese as it may be problematic to gain a reading using an upper arm monitor in that case.

Braun TrueScan Plus BPW4300E Wrist BPM Product Features:
•Stores 90 readings for two users (90 x 2 = 180 total memory) to its memory. Enabling families to share one monitor--follow instructions to change user.
• PC Link and SmartManager Software allow users to transfer data from monitor to PC (via USB cable), track measurements, create graphs, print off, and easily share results with GPs. Software requires Microsoft Windows to work.
• When taking BP with any wrist BPM, users must have their arm at heart level otherwise the reading may be invalid. The Braun TrueScan Plus makes this easy with its Active Positioning System. It will only take a reading if the arm is in the correct position and there is a beep and an icon guide on the monitor to help get to that position.
• WHO/ESH Indicator – evaluates every BP reading and is shown on the monitor with a cursor appearing close to the indicator at the appropriate BP ‘grade’ (green to red scale) according to ESH (European Society for Hypertension) and WHO (World Health Organisation) guidelines.
• An icon appears on the monitor if an irregular heartbeat is detected. This could be due to talking or moving, however if the symbol appears often it is recommended to seek medical advice. This should not replace a cardiac examination, but serves to detect pulse irregularities at an early stage.

• An icon appears on the monitor if morning hypertension is detected. This is when the morning average is 20 per cent or more above the evening average--it can be a key indicator of strokes.
• Average function--make sure time and date is set to ensure a correct reading. A seven-day average is provided.
Suitable for wrist circumference 13.5 to 21.5 cm, the Braun TrueScan Plus also has an easy to read LCD display screen with large buttons, auto shut-off for energy saving, low battery indicator, 2 x AAA batteries, instruction manual, BP diary, a storage case and two years warranty.

Safety Warning

Blood pressure monitor readings taken at home should not be relied upon as a substitute for your doctor’s diagnosis. Always read the instructions before use.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Braun TrueScan Plus is a nice bit of equipment for a blood pressure monitor. Well made and very user friendly. I don't always read instructions (and looking at the size of the manual it put me off a bit - although much of that includes instructions in many different languages), but even without instructions I worked out how to use it in 5 minutes. I've not taken my blood pressure at home before, but now I have this, I use it all the time. It's addictive! My husband also uses it, and he's had high blood pressure before (well, he lives me me, what do you expect?) so, when I received this to review I was really pleased and secretly hoping he'd use it as part of a new plan to look after himself. He is. And he finds it just as addictive! Great news as he is now more aware of what his body is telling him.

But how can we both use it without messing up each others measurements? I hear you cry. Well, that's the great thing about it. We can have two user accounts, which save and store our separate results in the memory for up to 90 days each. Ideal for us.

It measures the systolic and diastolic pressure, pulse rate and also has a heart rate indicator Other great features include:

* the clear and easy to understand screen with a coloured WHO/ESH indicator
* a 7 day average function
*an irregular heartbeat monitor
*a morning hypertension monitor (shows when the Morning Average is 20% or more higher than the Evening Average)
*comes with BP Smart Manger (TM) Software suitable for Microsoft Windows requiring a USB connector and at least 65mb or free space for installation.
*a data analysis button
*a small booklet to fill in your results

Just fasten the cuff to your wrist so it fits tightly and it beeps constantly until you have your arm in the right position. There's a picture on the screen of where your arm should be across your chest which helps you get your arm into the correct position for an accurate reading. Then it fills with air, just like the one at the doctors and and takes a reading as it deflates.

I highly recommend this product. It is the first one I have tried out, but it works like a dream. It also comes with a nice storage case and a USB connector. Everything you need to get up and running straight away. Good for catching those early warning signs, instead of waiting for an occasional check up with the doctor.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Simple to use (although quite picky about your arm position when taking a reading, which could be an issue if you have mobility problems) this is a really useful piece of kit for measuring your pulse and blood pressure. For data heads (and those looking to measure their BP long term), the cuff stores 90 days of results and comes with software to download the data onto your PC. You can also store data for two people and can switch between the two users easily before pressing the start button. The results are in clear, large digits and so are easy to read.

I'm not sure about the idea of this picking up an irregular heartbeat though. The pamphlet that comes with the BP cuff suggests that you should visit your doctor if you get a few readings of an irregular heartbeat (notified by a flashing icon on the screen). Great, but just because this machine hasn't picked anything up, doesn't mean you haven't got an issue (as it says in the small print). My only concern here is that for people who (for whatever reason) buy this machine instead of going to their GP to get their heart checked out, it could throw up false negatives. I understand this is as much of an issue about how the user interacts with the product, but the irregular heartbeat function forms quite a large part of the marketing behind this BP monitor, whereas in reality it should never be thought of as an accurate and viable alternative to a consultation with your GP.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Been using this on a daily basis for a while now and find it very easy to use, with useful features.

Its a fairly standard BP monitoring device, nicely made, complete with a disk to load onto your PC. I've not used this yet so can't comment.

The monitor is housed in a clear, see thru plastic box with a separate lid. Whilst this looks quite smart is not very practical as the device is a tight fit and needs to be put in correctly else it doesn't fit. Its also liable to break - my existing BP monitor comes in a box of softer plastic, more able to stand being dropped. And the lid was hinged rather than separate. Less chance of being mislaid!

As for the monitor itself? Fairly standard but seems to be easier to use than some. Attach it to your wrist, switch it on and cross your arm across your heart.....the monitor will bleep and change beeps once you've aligned your arm correctly. This can be tricky and I find this unit easier to align correctly than others I've used.

The display is clear and easy to read. Its also easy to understand too! Your reading will point to a simple colour coded bar on the scrfeen. Green - Yellow - Orange - Red. This allows you to see at a glance how 'good' (Green) your readings are.

The unit supports 2 users and records your previous figures and gives you an average reading.

It comes with a clear, well written manual which also gives some basic information on blood pressure levels and what they mean.

All in all, a good product, worth getting.
