It ultimately gave a good, close shave, even after a weeks' worth of growth. But in order to get that close shave, I had to go over it a lot more times than I normally have to with the 790cc. The precision long-hair trimmer really comes into its own when tackling the most stubborn spots. And yet despite this, it was still a more comfortable shave which left me with the least amount of irritation I've ever had from an electric razor. This is certainly an aspect of shavers which has come on hugely over the years & I'm thoroughly grateful for it! Indeed, it was the irritation caused by both wet & electric shavers which got me into the habit of shaving so infrequently in the first place!
Surprisingly, it doesn't require Braun's Clean & Renew system to clean it - just some water & a drop of oil once a week is sufficient. Which in fairness the manual claims is also the case with the 790cc. So perhaps this is a sign that Braun are moving away from their attempt to get electric shaver users to regularly buy consumables. Either way, the 340s requires little in the way of maintenance or 'faffing about', as it were, and does a great job too. So even though shaving takes a little bit longer now, I'm very happy with this product.
The head has a good spring to it, and glides across the contours of my face easily. My skin is quite sensitive, but the shaver is gentle enough on it despite giving a really close cut. It charges quickly (about an hour), and provides almost the same time in shaving (at least enough for a fair few days between charges).
Judging it on the quality of the shave, it's at least as good as Braun's higher-end models, not to mention less complicated and more compact. A great shaver for travelling (or simply saving space in the bathroom at home!).
So, I don't know if you've ever heard the saying (try and imagine this being said in a thick 'New Yoiker' accent) @I've got a Braun and it's never done me wrong'. I like Braun as a make, they're usually pretty decent electrical items...but I'm not going to be swayed by that.
I've been leaving my face to grow for 4 days. It's gone from the tough bristley spikey feel to now starting to feel like a soft fur. (photo's in the image gallery of before and after). My old shaver, a Wahl, would have managed this, but believe me there would have been pain and perhaps a bit of blood. More pain than blood. Especially under the nose.
The Braun takes about an hour to charge to a good strength, but I just leave it for half a day until I go back in the room and think I'd better unplug it (the manual wasn't very clear if you can keep it plugged in or not).
I went straight for under the nose. Expecting tears as the Wahl has a nice way of giving a slight 'tug' thanks to the metal plate between the heads. The Braun has that metal plate too, but it's shaped differently. more like something Paul Hollywood would put as decoration around one of his pies.
Cutting to the chase (boom boom), it was painless. More than that it shaved it first go.Read more ›
The Braun Series 3 340s-4 shaver provides around 45 minutes shaving time which for me is about a week to 10 days worth from a single charge. The charging time is about an hour, although, Braun recommend the first charge (or if you haven't used the shaver for a few months) is around four hours. The batteries are NiMh which tend not to suffer from a memory effect and hold their charge longer. There's an green LED charging indicator which blinks during charging and becomes steady when charged. A low charge (red) LED is provided and when it illuminates you should have sufficient power remaining to finish your shave. An LED will also remind you when the cutter cassette replacement is necessary. The on/off switch is decisive and there's a handy long hair trimmer for sideburns, moustache or a beard - it simply slides into position.
The shaving performance is very good resulting in a smooth, clean shave without irritation to the skin. The shaving head is formed of three elements - two foils and a cutter. The triple blades are nicely sprung and follow the contour of your face which may explain the ultra-smooth shave. The long hair trimmer which clicks into place is also effective at cutting stray hairs and sideburns etc.Read more ›
