Product Description

Product Description

How is your blood pressure?

In the UK about half of people over 65, and about 1 in 4 middle aged adults, have high blood pressure (sometimes called hypertension). This can lead to serious health problems such as kidney disease, heart attacks and strokes. There is no cure to high blood pressure but monitoring and a healthy lifestyle can be enough to keep it under control.
Naturally, if you care about your health, you care about your blood pressure. To treat hypertension successfully, your doctor may recommend that you take your blood pressure at home regularly, and record the results. This information can be very valuable for your treatment - but only if it is accurate. Blood Pressure measured in a doctors office only provides a momentary value. Repeated measurements at home better reflect one's actual blood pressure value under everyday conditions. Moreover, many people have different blood pressure when they measure at home because they tend to be more relaxed than when in the doctors office, blood pressure can often appear artificially elevated due to ‘white coat syndrome’. Regular blood pressure measurements taken at home can provide your doctor with valuable information on your normal blood pressure values under actual 'everyday' conditions.

Blood pressure changes throughout the day:

It can be influenced by several factors e.g.:
• Stress
• Physical Activities
• Emotional Status
• Time of the day
• Consumption of alcohol, coffee, tea
• Smoking
• Breathing Cycle

People’s blood pressure changes throughout the say due to the reasons above. The variations can be great which is why going to the doctors for one single measurement is not always enough. A home kit can be extremely useful in giving a persons ‘true’ blood pressure. The doctor can only take this measurement once in the day which does not always provide an accurate picture. This product can store 99 readings to its memory, with time & date, so you can record & show your GP.

Practical for use every day

This monitor can be used throughout the day, it measures both systolic and diasystolic pressure (both readings provide important information about health), and comes with a compact storage case so that you can easily take it anywhere with you. The auto shut off function makes the free AA batteries last even longer.
The Braun BP59000 Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor comes with one cuff size to fit all (23~43 cm arm circumference), so you can share it with your family. It is clinically validated to AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instruments), giving you reassurance that the readings are accurate if the device is used correctly.
This is the top of the range model with additional important features for added assurance- such as detecting irregular heartbeat and morning hypertension, which is a key indicator of increase risk of strokes. The advanced averaging function provides morning, evening and full day averages for improved blood pressure control. 2 years warranty.

2.0 out of 5 stars Did I get a faulty one? 26 Sep 2011
By Johnnybluetime TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Hmm, I love most of the Braun stuff I've got, but I'm pretty disappointed by this.Firstly, the batteries provided were already corroded when we got it and had to be discarded.Once new ones were inserted the results were very variable and I don't feel I could use this with any confidence. The first time I took my blood pressure was fine. The monitor comes with about 6 pages of instructions, but is easy enough to work out and seemed accurate enough. However, when I took my blood pressure again in the afternoon the arm band just kept inflating until it had a vice like grip on my arm, which was very painful, and kept on inflating until I managed to tear it off. I should think this is quite dangerous for elderly people and it certainly dented my confidence. Yesterday, we tested my wife's blood pressure, which it claimed was 98 over 57.Luckily, my wife is a nurse so she knew immediately that this reading was wrong, but I wonder how such inaccurate readings might affect someone who does have low or high blood pressure?

Overall, it's very easy to use and to understand, but out of eight readings three were patently wrong, so it's either trickier than it seems to get right ,I have a faulty one, or it is a lot less reliable than the old hand pump method.Given the state of the batteries that came with ours it may just be that this is a faulty one, but that certainly doesn't reflect well on Braun if it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top of the range. 21 Nov 2011
By Ian Wantling TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is without doubt probably the best domestic blood pressure monitor on the market, and looks as good as the professional ones used by the medcal fraternity.

The 99 memories act as an in built log to see your blood pressure history. I was using a basic Omron monitor before this Braun so am able to say the Braun is as easy to use as the Omron. The backlit monitor is a nice touch and the unit also alerts you if your heartbeat becomes irregular. I'd recommend this unit to anyone who needs to keed an eye on their blood pressure and heart rate as it'll do the job, is easily mastered and comes in a neat case for portability. Due to the cost of the Braun being at the higher end of the market I'd go for something cheaper if it's just your blood pressure you need to monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to use, reliable and reassuring 13 Feb 2012
By Bob's Mum TOP 500 REVIEWER
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
After a scare with Blood Pressure following a recent operation, I felt (for peace of mind) a BP monitor was a good investment to the family medical kit.

I was glad to get this one - it is simple to use, and reliable. It offers a memory of previous readings for tracking, and gives an accurate and clear picture of BP and pulse.

The cuff fits perfectly, the inflation is simple and effective - I'd recommend this for all home who feel they need to have such a piece of equipment.
