The shaver in itself looks lovely and fits the hands nicely and comes with a nice black hard fabric case and a small cleaning brush.
Along with the shaver comes a "Clean and Renew" stand/charger. Braun tell you that you can however, just wash it with water (and soap) as long as you apply a little oil every week or so to lubricate it.
THE SHAVER
It is very easy to use and very effective on the cheeks and directly under the chin. I do however find it a bit of a struggle on the neck/Adam's apple, taking a much longer time to get a good shave. The problem I feel is that you are meant to go against the direction of hair growth and for me its a bit random around the Adam's apple area. Maybe I will get used to it though as I go. I've come from using a rotary head shaver which applies a different shaving action, so that is maybe part of the problem.
Contrary to some of the other reviews I can say that I've never had the shaver catch and pull any hairs out yet.
The sideburn trimmer is excellent, really sharp and cuts very well.
THE CLEAN AND RENEW
It does work well and the shaver comes out smelling really fresh. The downside is the cost of the alcohol liquid (about £12 for 3) which apparently evaporates also, so will only last around two months. After using mine I have taken it out of the Clean & Renew cradle and put the lid back on to hopefully maximise its life. We shall see.

NB to prolong life of the cleaning fluid, although it kind of seems to defeat the purpose...it is best to clean your shaver foil and inside it quite thoroughly with water first. Otherwise those little bits of stubble end up in the clean and renew fluid after cleaning....AND then when you next clean, it shoots the dirty stubbly fluid into your shaver, so it's not fully clean afterward!

CHARGING
You can use the Clean & Renew station to do this along with a clean, or you can plug the cable which normally goes into the Clean & Renew system straight into the shaver to charge without cleaning. As it is a 2 pin socket, you will also need a plug adaptor for UK 3 pin system unless you have a shaver socket in your bathroom.
Overall I would say its a fairly good shaver (difficult to give a definitive comparable answer as this is the first foil shaver I've used), and also there is some debate as to whether I will continue to use the Clean and Renew all the time, but it does work well and especially if you want to keep it all hygienic too then it is a very good choice.

My face doesn't take kindly to wet shaving so for twenty five years I've been trying many different electric shavers looking for the ultimate product. I've found this new 3-series model from Braun to be pretty good, though not without some niggles. For example the switch seems to be quite sensitive and I've accidentally switched it off several times during my shave, plus the cost of the refills for the cleaning station is quite high, though to be fair it does still provide the best solution for returning the shaver to a clean, lubricated condition. The new style cleaning station is better than the old one in that it now has a firm electrical contact, but for some reason Braun have seen fit to remove the fan which dries the shaver, and that's a shame. It's very easy to clean the shaver under a running tap though if you don't want to rely on the station.
The actual shave from the 390cc-4 is close when used with a bit of attention, though it doesn't seem to stay smooth for long and I find that I need a shave sooner than I might with my old shaver. It also comes complete with a handy fabric case for storage or during travel. As always the best results have been when using Somersets Original Shaving Oil 12ml, and after washing my face (which is actually the opposite of that advised in the instructions). The shaver does seem to struggle with thick hair at times and sounds like it's slowing down, but it does keep shaving and I particularly like the precision switch which allows for easier shaving around the mouth/nose etc. I've also managed to get two weeks shaving from a single charge which is good.
Ultimately, this is a decent mid-range shaver from a reliable manufacturer and I will continue to use it every day. My search for the ultimate shaver is not yet over, but this model is on the right track.

Lets talk about beards - I'm the owner of a beard that has more direction changes than a coalition government. Not only does it not grow in one general direction but in quite a few places grows completely flat to my skin. This has proven tough to shave even for the best wet razors. What about my philtrum - you know that grooved bit attached under your nose which stops you top lip from dropping in your morning coffee - its a right pain in the proverbial. By now you will have deduced I'm a wet shaver and I have the beard that the majority of us have - and not the one advertising executives film for the fatuous campaigns for their shaving products. Braun could learn a thing or two here as one of the videos shows a guy who embodies shaving perfection - yeah, right!
So to the Braun Series 3, my beard was ready (I had 6 days growth). I unpacked it all slid the Braun CCR3 Clean & Renew Refill Cartridges - 3-Pack that came with it (you get one cartridge) which last 4 weeks if you shave every day, which currently works out about 92p per week if you buy the replacements off Amazon.
I then discovered after a quick bit of reading that I should use trimmer on any beard that had over three days of growth. After doing this I began, careful to keep the shaver at right angles to my face.
The result:
Initial reaction; I was not that impressed. However after using it on a day to day basis the results are getting better to the point where I quite enjoy using and can say that I like it.
Does it replace a wet shave?
Well I haven't run to the bathroom looking for my wet razor yet. Therefore the answer has to be a yes but only time can tell.
The plus points:
1. It cleans itself - if you are as lazy as I am then that's a boon.
2. Its got a nifty charging and cleaning unit with a pleasing neon blue glow that appeals to you inner Knight Rider.
3. Its a comfortable and close shave - once you get into the swing of it. I have sensitive skin and thought that it might cause irritation but its been great.
4. After cleaning its got a really nice citrus smell which adds a freshness to air as you shave and makes me sound like girl when I describe it.
The minus points:
1. You have buy replacement Braun CCR3 Clean & Renew Refill Cartridges - 3-Pack which at 92p will not break the bank but I have to mention it.
2. The foil Braun Replacement Foil & Cutter Cassette - 32S, Series 3 - Silver or Braun Replacement Foil & Cutter Cassette - 32B, Series 3 - Black will, apparently, need to be replaced after around 18 months of use or when the shaver tells you by blinking a light. Cost around £21 - £25.
3. Takes around 2 mins to clean itself but 4 hours to dry.
The final view: If you are an electric razor fan you wont go far wrong with this but if you converting from wet to dry then I would still say that this a good razor but don't expect perfection from your first shave!
