Product Description

Product Description

A humorous and affectionate story of one man's National Service days. Two million young men did National Service between the end of World War II and 1963. Many loved it, some hated it, but the service left a profound impression on them all, and for most this has lasted a lifetime. After over 40 years Tony Thorne recalls his National Service. From a disastrous medical at the beginning, to a court martial at the end, he tells of a succession of absurd incidents with much good humour. The Army's own peculiar language, basic training, inter-squad boxing, BAOR exercises and a demolished cookhouse are just some of the incidents he recollects. The author aims to provide entertaining nostalgia for those who served and a humorous insight into a way of life now gone forever for those who didn't.

From the Publisher

Hilarious
I read many books in the course of my job, but I can honestly say that I have never laughed so much as when I read this book. This does seem to be a uniform response from everyone else as well. Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly funny, 4 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This is without doubt the funniest book I have read for years and I wasn't even in the forces. I have given this book to several friends and they have all laughed. I laughed out loud continuously.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and entertaining for an ex-soldier, 12 Jun 2000
By A Customer
As an ex-GI of the US Army, I read an early copy of the book and found that I identified by type most of the young commissioned officers and the older non-coms in the Brisitish Army with those I encountered in the same time frme. The book reads like Thorne talks, and it is obvious that his real "buddies" are the guys who endured the peace-time army with himj. It really brought back my memories, and those of several friends here in the Colonies who also read my copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very entertaining and amusing read with universal appeal, 17 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I reside in Califonia but I was fortunate enough to be sent a copy of Brasso , Blanco and Bull by a friend in England who noted how funny it was and thought that I would enjoy the sense of humor displayed in the book. I was never in the sevice myself but I found myself chuckling out loud . I was so entertained that I ordered four more copies which I gave to friends, all of whom have fedback to me how funny they found the book . The humor is international and certainly not limited to those with a military background.I would strongly reccomend that you publish the book in the U S A as the self deprecating British humor, which is the essence of Brasso, Blanco and Bull, is very appealing to most americans .

5.0 out of 5 stars A crackingly funny book. I read it twice it was so good.
This must be the funniest book on any bookshelf. Thorne has an easy knack of painting authentic pictures of his service from those far off years. Read more
