Synopsis

Brassed Off is a charming comedic drama starring Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaithe and Tara Fitzgerald. The story is one of quiet desparation among miners who want to continue to work - despite the dangers and hardships of the profession but know that in the 1980s and early 90s the politics are against them and that the possiblity of a management review to keep their pit open is a sham. With no hope on the horizon the colliery band is on the verge of breaking up when in walks a girl with a flugel... I was never much of fan of brass bands - until I watched this film. The acting is superb, the script spot on but the music lifts the film into another dimension.

This film has to be one of my all time favourites. It is honestly amazing, Its funny at times but also can be very sad, which is brilliant. I love it!

This is a fantastic film of similar stature to `Mamma Mia' mingling music and emotions, but with more earnest connotations. Obvious parallels may be drawn to the plot of `Brassed Off' and the miners' strike, the closure of Grimethorpe Colliery in 1993, and the Colliery Band's many successes as a top brass band in Yorkshire and National Championships. These links add poignancy to an already moving and frustrating story concerning a pit under threat as well as a band on the verge of break-up. There may be tears to shed over public political anger and private personal problems, but comradeship, romance, humour and a spectacular finale promote a sublime feel-good factor. Above all, and throughout the film, opportunities are seized for great displays of brass band playing. Interpretations by well known actors are excellent but it is the skilful and seamless interweaving with unknown magnificent musicians of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, performing at their most majestic, that make this DVD Grimethorpe's greatest.
