Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The second album from The Ordinary Boys, Brassbound finds this mod-styled Brighton bootboys evolving from the Weller-style Britpop of their debut, Over The Counter Culture, making explicit the dub, reggae, and ska influences that previously only lurked in the shadows. It’s a wise move, as the rollicking opening salvo of "Brass Bound" and "Boys Will Be Boys" – a natty, brass-laden number featuring Rankin Junior of reunited ska legends The Beat – neatly demonstrates.

But there’s room for reflection within, too: frontman Sam Preston’s songwriting has audibly matured since the Boys’ debut, his skill for light nostalgia and Morrissey-esque poeticism feeding into "Life Will Be The Death Of Me" and the cautionary "Don’t Live Too Fast" - a song about "knowing what it means/To be bursting at the seams". Meanwhile, a cover of obscure ‘60s Birmingham outfit Locomotive’s "Rudi Can’t Fail" proves Ordinary Boys know their history, and confirms there’s nothing wrong with a spot of retro, just so long as the movements you’re cherry-picking from still sound alive and kicking. --Louis Pattison

Brassbound 16 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD
I first heard Boys will be Boys on the NME album and I loved it straight away. I bought Brassbound before the hype about Preston going into the Big Brother House and I am still to this day listening to it in my car. I am 39 years old, and it does have sounds of the old ska sound back in the 80s when I was a teenager. I haven't gotten bored with the album yet which says something and I like eache and every song, especially Rudi's in Love. Possibly the best album I've bought in a long time.

I bought over the counter culture in a local record shops sale bin, and thought it was amazing. That was untill I'd had a listen to this. Very rarely does a band produce it's best work second, but this is proof of that. This is in no way a mod-retro-ska revival for the sake of it, it feels completely genuine and rightly so.
Brassbound is such a british sounding album it gives a sense of pride that I haven't felt for years when listening to an album,
These are tracks that yearn for playing at the poolside when your laying on your sunlounger in Tenerife/Majorca/Cyprus etc.
as for the track by track rundown, I'm in full agreement with the other reviewer here, there is not a bad track on there, nothing is skip-able, it's all so so good, particular faves are,
"Boys will be boys", "Thanks to the Girl", "Call To Arms" and "Red Letter Day", I have the feeling that the general music press want to see The Ordinary Boys fail, for keeping it simple, which is what this basically is, nothing fancy, nothing excentric, just good honest beats, lyrics and cracking tunes.
please please buy it it will make you feel so much better.
One final thing Prestons appearance in Big Brother will have done this album no harm whatsoever. A seemingly lovely guy who kept it real.

A smooth sound 11 April 2006

I finally got around to to buying Brassbound having loved Over The Counter Culture. Whereas OTCC was raw mod rock, this is a smooth summer sounding Ska classic. Good to see The Ordinary boys attracting some hype and a big following, despite the lengths taken to gain publicity

Not Really A Review!
As the title explains, this isn't really a review. I just wanted to say that Jon has obviously never heard of The Specials, or anything else from the two tone era of which he was... Read more

Ska-tastic!
Preston's gamble certainly paid off by going into the BB House to get much needed publicity for the band (what a cool guy!), as their 2nd album is now shooting up the music charts. Read more
