Biography

“Freire’s grasp of these vast edifices is remarkable, not just in their colossal technical demands but in their moments of poetry where Brahms the chamber musician steps to the fore.”
Gramophone [review of his Brahms concertos with Chailly]

Born in Boa Esperança, Brazil, Nelson Freire began piano lessons at the age of three with Nise Obino and Lucia Branco, ... Read more in Amazon's Nelson Freire Store

Having just heard Freire in recital, he has to be one of the most underrated pianists alive now - I've no issue with the younger stars getting deserved acclaim, but most of them could benefit from watching this unassuming and undemonstrative musician, with a technique to die for that's always used to serve the music. Most of the pieces on this CD are from his native Brazil, and therefore less familiar to European audiences, but where most pianists would use these as light-hearted encores, Freire somehow makes them seem like masterpieces. Even Villa Lobos went up in my estimation, and I could easily develop a soft spot for Francisco Mignone.... worth every penny!

In tis record, Nelson Freire pays an hommage to the music of our country,in a very spontaneus and happy way, and none is more apt to do so, since this repertory has accompanied him since his childhood. We thank him for the precious gift he offers to his admirers.

Nelson Freire - subtle inspiration in Brazilian repertory 6 Oct. 2012
By P. Adrian - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Nelson Freire's worldwide aficionados will exult at listening to this CD; first of all, because the great Brazilian pianist decided to issue a new recording in his relatively less numerous catalogue. The pace of his studio adventures seems now to have been established at the level of once a year that, however, is still too scarce for his admirers. This most recent release of Freire features his famous virtuosity and seductive musicianship in a special repertory, namely the Brazilian music for piano solo which is so close to his soul and so suitable to his artistic means. One can find on this recent recording many pieces by the iconic Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, along with others signed by no less famous Camargo Guarnieri, by Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez, Henrique Oswald, Alexandre Levy, Joaquim Antonio Barrozo Netto, Claudio Santoro or Francisco Mignone. For Nelson Freire, his native Brazil is an inexhaustible source of inspiration which flourishes in wonderful colours of his playing. He feels the proper rhythms of this music. He can lead like no other the melodic flow of it and find the more adequate aromas to convey the required atmosphere.

Don't hesitate to order this new DECCA release and complete your collection of pianistic gems! It is fully rewarding and refreshing for all those who resonate to the subtlety and poetic touch of this major artist of the piano called NELSON FREIRE!

Nelson Freire in Top Form in Brazilian Music 15 Jan. 2013
By J Scott Morrison - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I've admired Nelson Freire's talent for more than fifty years after first hearing him in recital all that time ago. He had, I thought, been recording less recently, but apparently I'm wrong about that; I'm going to have to go find some more of the latest ones. I hadn't gotten anything of his since the two CDs in the 'Great Pianists of the Twentieth Century' set (which I recommend unreservedly.) Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century The main draw on this disc is the wonderful, but mostly unknown (outside its own country) Brazilian music. Villa-Lobos' piano music has been much recorded, of course, but Freire brings such élan to his playing of the Carnaval das Crianças it's almost like hearing it anew. I'd never heard his 'New York Skyline' before, and that was my loss. We get one of the lesser known pieces, O Gatinho de Papelão, from the Prole do Bebé set. In fact all the other short Villa-Lobos pieces are done as well as I've ever heard them.

Of course many know the music of the wonderfully named Mozart Camargo Guarnieri -- I particularly recommend his piano concertos Camargo Guarnieri: Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2 and 3 -- and we get three short pieces that demonstrate his sassy rhythmic sense as well as his ability to find memorable melodies. His breathless Toccata is a bracing, virtuosic romp for Freire.

Then there are short pieces by Henrique Oswald, Alexandre Levy, Joaquim Antònio Barrozo Netto, Oscar Lorenzo Fernández, Claudio Santoro, and Francesco Mignone. I was particularly struck by Levy's Tango Brasileiro; I wanted to find a partner and dance! Fernández's Trés Estudos em Forma de Sonatina is a neoclassic gem. Another Toccata, this one by Santoro, reminds one of early Prokofiev. Mignone's Valse Elegante is aptly named. I had to play it three times in a row before I could go on; a bit of Ravel and a lot of Poulenc, with an overlay of Brazilian rhythm. Finally, Mignone's Congada Dança Basileira tops things off with suavity and grace.

A wonderful collection. Thank you, Mr Freire. May you continue recording for years to come!

Wonderful recording 24 Feb. 2013

Wonderful to listen to in the dark for all the subtleties of Friere's comprehension and playing of this music. Or to play quietly in the background while reading a good book.

This CD is a winner for a big range, from the most casual of listeners to any member of the cognoscenti. In each performance, Nelson Freire shows not only his deep and serious technical ability, but also his thoughtful ideas about programming, his ability to produce a wide spectrum of instrumental sound.. The range of works on this CD, together with the exquisite artistry that the pianist shows in presenting each piece for its particular sound, is admirable. I had wished for some Nazareth (perhaps on a second CD?). Since this wonderful composer's works are not included, I'll keep on playing the many insouciant tangos myself.
