Well, the slogan may not roll off the tongue so easily, but the Heinz advert has served them for several generations and perhaps now it's time for someone else to put their crown on the humble baked bean. Surely a tin of beans is a tin of beans though?
Not so. Along come Branston (didn't they make pickle once?) and boldly go where no one has dared go before. And for many, myself included, the results are superior in terms of taste and sauce quality.
Branston have more beans, according to the ingredient list, 53% against Heinz's 51%, and they also have more sauce at 37% against Heinz's 34%. Sugar and salt content are not worth worrying about, they're both pretty much the same, and for those who are concerned, the low sugar and salt (and taste!) are available by both manufacturers.
So why are Branston so nice? For me it's the sauce that makes the difference, the ingredients show a hint of onion powder, a bit of white pepper and `flavouring' (whatever that is?), a bit of modified cornflour to thicken things up and presto, the taste is big and tasty and so much better than the slightly thinner Heinz.
Pricewise, everyone will shop around, but in general I find Branston come more frequently on special offer than Heinz.
Branston on my toast everytime please.
