A forced groom.
A switched bride.
And a lot of lies.

Lord Gillian Tremayne has everything. Society embraces him. Women love him. Men emulate him. He's rich. Intelligent. Eligible. Tall. Incredibly handsome. Charming. And trapped. There's nothing worse than marriage to Helen Bingham - a black-mailing, evil-spirited woman with a soiled reputation...

Except the woman behind the wedding veil.

Helene Bingham's had more than enough trouble in her short life. And nobody's ever around to help. That's why she invented Brandy - the wench of loose morals, sharp tongue, and fast reflexes. Brandy finds it a grand jest to stand in for her cousin at the wedding, and there's a bonus: It saves Helene, too.

At least, until her groom finds out...

Helene's quick, but even she has trouble keeping up with her new husband. He's the only one she can't fool. He's got wit to go with his handsome face, honor to match his words, kisses that seduce, and sensual skills...

Where is Brandy when she needs her?

the style of writing is difficult to follow , very disjointed, which spoilt a good story. If all her books are written in this way they are not for me.

Helene is the long suffering heroine of this tale. She has used her courage and wits to stay sane after being thrown into bedlam by her vindictive, conniving relatives. She has even managed to avoid rape at the hands of her heartless cousin and the asylum guards, in fact she has only one big flaw. The affection she feels for the manipulative, arrogant 'hero'.

He really is dreadful! He has admittedly been tricked into marriage and presented with an apparently insane bride and yet to his credit he has her injuries treated and shows a measure of sympathy towards Helene. However, despite his occasional show of compassion he is frequently guilty of insulting Helene, intimidating her, lying to her and choosing to think the worst of her on almost every occasion. Even when he begins to see she is not a 'whore' as he so charmingly calls her, he still lies to her and manipulates her.

Such a pity Helene was a really interesting heroine with many worthy qualities. She deserved a better 'hero' than the one the author created for her. I especially find the way he tricks her into consumating their marriage and then pretends to her that he can't remember it, particularly unpleasant behavior.

I know he's supposed to be uncertain if he can trust her, but it still seems I unnecessarily cruel behaviour towards a woman he knows has been badly treated, even if he doesn't know the full truth about her.

Also, if you prefer the narrative not to stray into the bed chamber, I note despite the heroine protecting her virtue for so long the intimacies between the Baron and Helene are described in detail and little is left to the imagination.
