Synopsis

The year 2004 marks the centenary of Bill Brandt, one of the foremost photographers of the 20th century. In celebration, the Victoria and Albert Museum will be holding a major retrospective exhibition of Brandt's work. This small gift book, Brandt Icons, is published by the Bill Brandt Archive as its own centenary tribute to the work of a great artist. Containing thirty of the most famous of Brandt's images, beautifully presented, this book will be the best possible way to be introduced to his work and enjoy and understand the artistry Brandt employed in every genre: photojournalism, the nude, landscape, the urban scene and the portrait. Each selected photograph is beautifully displayed and printed in this gem of a publication, a fitting tribute to a master photographer.

ICONS is published by the Bill Brandt Archive as its own centenary tribute to the work of a great British eye.

ICONS presents 30 of Brandt's most famous images produced to the highest standard ever. It is a generous and perfect introduction to his multi-genre work: photojournalism, the nude, landscape, the urban scene, and the portrait.
Whether Brandt was taking pictures of London streets during the blackout or sleepers in the Underground during the Blitz; coal miners or high society in pre-war Britain; moody, pared-down landscapes or elegant abstracted nudes, he always imbued his photographs with strangeness and mystery, with a Surrealist touch, with rich connotations.

ICONS pulls the most memorable of his images together for a rich overview of an even richer life's work. Quite an amazing book on a rich and colourful photographer. The quality is really good especially at this low price level and it makes a pretty gift.

A tiny reperesentation 17 Jan 2006

crucial taste of Brandt 1 July 2009
By J. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Icon is a good survey of Brandt's work. It's physically small but the reproductions are much better than in some of his bigger, more expensive books, far better than magazine reproductions.

Brandt's nudes-on-gravel-beaches got my attention in "arty" photo magazines forty years ago. I assumed I was seeing 28mm on 35...but it turns out I was seeing very wide angle 8X10 or larger.

I bought Icon as a catalog for a comprehensive traveling Brandt exhibit in 2008. Icon evokes the exhibit beautifully...the exhibit made Brandt one of my favorite photographers, with Avedon, Penn, Lyons, and Fusco...and that makes Icon important to me.

Brandt did a lot of physical (pencil, dye, bleach) retouching. You can see it easily in his original prints. That's important information...he wasn't uptight-Ansel-like. Most of his work had intense psychological or sociological or intentionally art-related implications. Icon depicts that as well as any, but no book could possively depict the nature of Brandt's prints, seen directly.

Icon is the least expensive Brandt... you do need it, even if you already own something more impressive for your coffee table.
