Praise for Branding Yourself

"Branding Yourself is a good beginner's guide on how to build an online presence using social networks and blogs that will turn you into a thought leader or expert or just get you a job."

–Dan Schawbel, #1 International Bestselling Author of Me 2.0

"The biggest problem most people have with embracing the power of online networking and personal brand building is they don't know where to start. Erik Deckers and Kyle Lacy take out the guesswork and roll the dice with platforms to find the right combination for you in this book. The book is a recipe for success...your success."

 –Jason Falls, SocialMediaExplorer.com

“In this exceedingly useful book, Erik Deckers and Kyle Lacy provide step-by-step guidance for building and maintaining powerful personas. With wit, wisdom, and numerous expert tips, Branding Yourself is the new roadmap for navigating the sometimes complex world of personal branding. If your best marketing plan is you (and it is), then Branding Yourself should be your playbook.”

–Jay Baer, Coauthor of The NOW Revolution: 7 Shifts to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter, and More Social

"Our parents taught us to find a great job with benefits, put money toward retirement, buy a home, and work hard, and you'll reap the benefits. Our parents were wrong. The job market was downsized; the retirement account was ransacked; the house lost its value; and working hard has only put you in the unemployment line. Those who personally branded themselves were able to capitalize on the down-turned economy, and their businesses exploded. Erik Deckers and Kyle Lacy are providing you the blueprint for kicking off your brand and effectively leveraging online technologies to transform your future. [This book is] a must read."

–Douglas Karr, Founder of the Marketing Technology blog, CEO of DK New Media, and Author of Corporate Blogging for Dummies

"In an environment filled with philosophy, platitudes, and '30,000-foot views,' Erik Deckers and Kyle Lacy give us a refreshing how-to guide for actually doing something meaningful through social media. Here's a trustworthy book to help you (and me) take real action to leverage emerging tools to create customers and make them happy!"

–Trey Pennington, Entrepreneur, Story Prospector, Author of Spitball Marketing

A good introduction for a beginner like me. It covered all the areas I wanted to know about - building a personal brand via blogging, twitter and Facebook. I wanted to plan a social media brand strategy for my creative work, but didn't know where to start. It was the ideal book for me. If you already work in the social media field, or use Facebook and Twitter etc regularly it might be a bit basic but I think there would still be things to learn even then. Only quibble - the constant interruption by the authors with twitter-style 'amusing banter' was annoying after a while.

Branding Yourself 12 Sep 2011
By Tami Brady TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
When you are interacting on Facebook or tweeting your buddies, what image are you portraying? Do you stand for something specific and express your best qualities or do you randomly put out information that could come back and haunt you?

No matter whether you work for someone else or own a business, it's important that your actions (including online content) reflect who you truly are and what you want others to know about you. Branding Yourself takes you through the process of defining your brand and then using social media to promote and strengthen that brand.

Branding Yourself is presented in a semi-informal way, almost as if the authors are tweeting and conversing online. It's a great example of real meaningful conversations that engage readers. I hope newbies take note. Far too often, when people are introduced to social media they try to strong-arm their way trying to reach as many people as possible but providing very little value. It's rather like those annoying guys at conferences who think that the aim is to get rid of a pile of business cards.

I liked this book because it's easy to read, practical, and has very little padding.

Dekers & Lacy guide you through the basics of making your business strategy precise and concise, which is then used as a reference point to make your sales and marketing pitches hang together. They take you throug the process of writing your "brand story" in a pretty painless way - and it is a critical but often overlooked foundation.

Then they jump into the 'sexy' stuff of putting up images and stories. I am an ICT incompetent. I liked the simple and clear instructions and descriptions of social marketing. Everything you need to know is there: tools, techniques, where to go, basic steps, costs, benefits etc etc. There wasn't any padding or "aren't I clever" stuff. Full marks for that.

So it's a good book, well worth the money. (Actually, here's a confession: I got the book out of the library, liked it so much I bought it to keep as a reference.)

The only thing I didn't like was the silly @edeckers and @kyleplacy exchanges. I presume they are supposed to be funny relief. They aren't. They are dorky and irritating.
