About the Author
As a child, Kaleb Nation was forced to write one pag a week in creative writing. But after he finished his story, no one could make him stop. At age twelve, he telephoned the editor of a major publisher to pitch his book but got to talk with security instead. Years later, his books are being produced by publishers world wide ... including the one that first turned him down. Aside from writing, Kaleb is a blogger and a former radio host. I really enjoyed this book and I have to say that while with most book series the first usually has a bigger impact, this one I'm actually pretty undecided which one I liked best: the farfield curse or the specter key.
You can definitely see an evolution in the writing and it's a very gripping book from start to finish with an unexpected plot.

I thoroughly enjoyed walking into the creative mind of Kaleb Nation when I flipped open Bran Hambric: The Specter Key. The world he created is colorful and rich in detail. The action was ongoing throughout the book and made me wonder what was going to happen next.
The story begins where Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse leaves off and jumps in with both feet. Elspeth & Joris share their evil plans by introducing the next challenge Bran will have to endure.
Kaleb Nation created interesting new characters that tugged at my heartstrings. While reading, I wanted to hug Gary, smack Thomas and tip Oswald. Gary has a deep secret Bran has to seek out and discover. Thomas is hard and unfeeling but the conversations with Bran are entertaining. Oswald, is just a cool character with a kind heart and good customer service.
The conclusion had closure and didn't leave me hanging but left subtle hints of what we might see in the next book.

As If: The Sequel

While reading the first book, "The Farfield Curse," I noticed author Kaleb Nation's overuse of the words "as if." It drove me crazy and I'd hoped he wouldn't do it again for the sequel. My prayers went unanswered. As soon as I read the first "as if," my left eye started twitching. By the end of the book, which is surprisingly short, I was all messed up.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I can say the book was fun to read and definitely better than the first. I still have trouble believing Kaleb hadn't read any of the Harry Potter books considering it seems like he's totally ripping them off. The book read so much like "Order of the Phoenix" that it was ridiculous. Plus, why does everybody talk like they're British? I think Bran even uses the word "bloody" as a curse word.
Also, Kaleb overdescribes things like a son of a gun. A lot of his sentences are so loaded, that by the end of them, I forgot what he was even talking about. Here's hoping he'll tighten up his prose for his next book. And please, no more "as if"! Pretty please!
