Manufacturer's Description

Ants are fascinating creatures and this habitat makes a super cool space-age desktop toy or funky accessory for a kid’s bedroom! Based on a 2003 NASA Space Shuttle experiment to study animal life in space and test how ants successfully tunnel in microgravity. TheSpaceAnts™ Gel is complete with nutrients to promote healthy growth. Watch ants live, work and tunnel in the nutritious gel as they create series upon series of intricate tunnels. Includes a fascinating instruction booklet with interesting facts about ants, an ant catching/starter tool and the SpaceScope extreme zoom lens for real close up ant action! The complete self contained ant habitat with no food or water required! The ants shown are not native to Europe but the enclosed coupon allows you to mail order a local species. There is a small P&P charge for this service. Alternatively you can have great fun harvesting your own colony!

Product Description

Inspired by NASA, the Antworks Space Ants supports a fascinating colony of ants that will build an intricate tunnel network. The ants are easy to look after as they require no food or water because everything is provided for in the gel. Ants have a life span of about 6 months so if their work colleagues don't survive they are carried out of the tunnels and brought to the surface. The Antworks Space Ants is an ideal gift for inquisitive children and makes a fascinating display for a table or desk. Size: Antworks Space Ants (box) W 24cm x H 17.5cm x D 5cm

Trouble to get ants in, then when we did they died. 2 batches of dead ants so far and we will not bother with a third batch.

Total Dissapointment 17 Jan 2011
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Got one of these for the kids, lots of excitement.

First let down, mail in coupon for ants - or order form as it's known around these parts. Mail in coupon implies it's pre-paid and there's nothing pre-paid about this one.

Second let down, the gel pulls away from the sides and the ants just squeeze down there instead of tunnelling. Had one tunnel about 2" long until they noticed it was quicker to head down the sides. Certainly never got anything like the pictures.

Third let down, having travelled straight down the sides the ants did make a chamber at the bottom to live in but the optical properties of the plastic tank meant you couldn't actually see them unless you picked up the tank and looked in from below. We had already spent two weeks telling the kids never to pick it up so this meant they never got to see the ants.

Fourth let down, after about 6 weeks the gel goes moldy and kills the ants.

Fifth let down, the gel is not replaceable (well there seemed to be some american sites or a 'homebrew' recipe, both of which had mixed reviews) You can't buy a replacement gel pack and start afresh.

Finally - so what happened, basicaly, it's landfill there doesn't seem to be anything else you can do with it.

Bit of a let down 19 April 2009
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I bought this for my 4 year old son at Christmas as he has an interest in all things small that move. I had great expectations for this toy and he was very excited about it. We had to send off for the ants through the post which took around four weeks but this wasn't a problem, however, when they arrived it was a nightmare trying to get them into the narrow top without half of them escaping or getting trapped in the lid as we tried to close it. In the end we managed it having around 12 ants in there in the end. The disapointing thing is that the ants didn't survive or make tunnels, they just huddled together in the corner and after a few weeks they died, we have tried again and used ants from garden but again they haven't made tunnels and have died. In the end this toy has been a big disapointment.
