Product Description

GENIUS...

He is a brilliant neurosurgeon, the "boy genius" whose research into the workings of the human brain has gained him worldwide renown. He himself had been the subject at birth of an incredible medical experiment, one which had succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of the medical profession.

..OR MADMAN?

But now he has overstepped the boundaries of that profession, carrying on his own experiments in a manner so bizarre as to be inconceivable to the mind of the average man. His patients are no longer patients, but helpless victims, their brains controlled by his psychic and technological powers. He will sacrifice anyone or anything to his manic obsession. He has become an agent of death rather than a saver of lives. He must be stopped. But how, and by whom...?

(Approximately 90,000 words.)

There IS a future-science story in here somewhere, but I've read it too many times before. And there's far too much other improbable and irrelevant fantasy New-Age nonsense about ESP.

Characterisation is weak, the plot meanders/stops/starts/stalls, denouements go on FOR EVER, one individual apparently brainwashes and thereafter mentally controls another with an 'unsatisfactory' snog (!?!?!), and new information and characters are introduced after the climactic events of the novel (about one-sixth of the book is after these events). There's a lack of understanding of due process that suggests an author who may not be old enough to stay up late to watch gritty police drama. A lack of understanding of ethics in scientific research and care of the vulnerable. A faint whiff of something unpleasant regarding ethnicity.

There is a story here, as I say, but I really wish I hadn't read this. It left me feeling ... grimy.

Tense thriller, more towards the futuristic style than conventional thriller, but a good story all the same, well written. Pacey and good characterization.

Disappointed 25 Jun 2011

I'm very surprised that this author has written so many novels. While reading this book, I just kept saying to myself that this seemed like such amateur writing. The characters had no development or history - in short, I didn't care about them. Why was the detective such an "ice man", why was he the dept super star? The female Dr. seemed to easily jump from one male character to another but without getting into her head to understand why. The dialogue was very cheesy (maybe better as tv script?)I'd give examples but they'd be out of context. The plot was choppy - Spears' incident at the first suicide scene seemed blown way out of proportion - they pegged him as nuts, as having a mental breakdown, yet reading the scene I didn't understand the big deal (and insert more cheesy dialog involving the Captain and the partner). And how did they focus on Braca so soon - they took so many leaps of faith it made the book unreal - it may be fiction, but basic investigative protocol should still play.

Anyway, I desparately wanted to stop reading the book but I hate people who criticize without finishing, so I did. And it didn't get any better. I kept waiting for some big twist, something that would make it a little worthwhile, instead, it was worse than a fairy tale type ending.

Stick to authors like Robin Cook, Dean Koontz et al for medial or super natural thrillers.

A slice of a trip from the dark recesses of mind and facility to "the sky`s the limit!" Very enjoyable read and highly vocalized characters.

A Good Read, not great but still enjoyable. 16 April 2012
By Mark J. Welch - Published on Amazon.com

Yes, the characters are shallow, lacking background or context. Yes, the story is contrived. But this book fits perfectly in its genre of "scifi/medical/thriller," and it is quite similar to a Robin Cook/Michael Chrichton novel.

The book's formatting was troublesome, especially the absence of any visual cues for scene changes within a chapter. This, plus some specific typographical errors, led me to suspect that this novel's text was scanned and converted using OCR software, and would have benefited from a few hours of a proofreader's time.

No, it's not a great book, and yes, it's formulaic, and some elements of the story line tested my ability to suspend disbelief. But it was an enjoyable read.
