Krebbers may not be a particularly well known soloist but do not let this put you off this recording. Since its first release in 1973 this version of the violin concerto has remained at or near to the top of recommended recordings and is to be preferred to most of the 'big name' versions. Krebber's tone is rich and his playing is sweet and precise. Haitink's accompanyment is perfect. The recording is exellent (as long as you are not super-sensitive to analogue hiss). Highly recommended.

Having read the previous review on this recording I went ahead and purchased to add to the number of recordings I have of the Brahms Vioilin Concerto. I have to say I have definately not been disappointed. This is a really engaging and atmospheric recording. You really get the feel that the soloist is giving something of himself and not just going through the motions. To my ears, the quality of the recording is superb and warm without sounding at all muddled
By way of background it appears the recording was made at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam in 1973 when Krebbers, himself Dutch, was 50 years old. The balance between violin and orchestra is spot-on and really the whole piece is a joy. I knew nothing of Herman Krebbers and it appears his recorded repertoire is sadly limited.
I would certainly recommend this recording - it is warm but shows the power and tenderness which is Brahms. As a secondhand buy, for a very limited outlay you can listen to a beautiful piece played by a violinist and orchestra of the top order.

Desert Island CD 19 Mar 2011
By Gil Zilkha - Published on Amazon.com
I own over a dozen Brahms violin concerto recordings and have heard many more. While my favorite remains the 1944 Bronislaw Huberman recording on Music & Arts, this is my first choice in modern sound. Much like Huberman, Krebbers cuts right to the heart of Brahms's music in all three movements. And the sound is wonderfully full and vibrant. The Brahms concerto is my favorite work, and this CD would be near the top of the list of "desert island" CDs for me.
