For me this is the definitive interpretation of this mighty score whose first movement is marked pellucidly just 'Maestoso', then the Clara archetypal connection in the slow movement and the sleight-of-hand finale variations. The consistent approach here is integrated , symphonic, simpatico. There's a Bach-like unwavering drive in the 1st movement that makes the climax before the recapitulation inexorable. Elsewhere there's a gentleness and deftness that evokes the feminine as Brahms does. It's a performance of total like-minded commitment, and very good to stop feeling grumpy while enduring inane mobile conversations while strap-hanging.Mentally aim that first timpani strike at them and take it from there.
