This is a marvel of a performance and a superb recording, the likes of which we aren't going to get once again in a lifetime.

This was one of the rarest collaboration between Rubinstein and the CSO with Reiner.
The other two recording they made together are the Rachmaninoff Paganini-variation and Rachmaninoff second piano concerto (where the relation between Reiner and Rubinstein went sour), non of these two recordings got the SACD treatment, unfortunately.

This recording of the Brahms piano concerto (with Leslie Chase recording engineer) was made in 1954 at the very dawn of the stereo era - using tube gear, two channel tape and pair of omnidirectional microphones that superbly captured the old Chicago hall acoustics and with it a full-body piano tone - is one of the greatest recording achievements.
The playing of the orchestra and pianist is a celebration of fiery, boldness and "togetherness" which goes here hand in hand.
If ever there were two great performances of this piano concerto capture on tape, this is one, while the other is the Curzon/Szell 1961 recording by Decca.

We are blessed and lucky to have this stereo analogue tape from 1954 survive and we are double lucky to have a superb SACD version of it made.
Any one with decent hearing and decent playback system should grab the SACD (limited edition they are all), before stocks are exhausted, as Sony stopped making those, fired the transfer to SACD team.
No more RCA Living-Stereo SACDs, no more superb sound - a business decision that reflects mediocrity and stupidity celebrated hand in hand there. A most regrettable decision.

As things stand now and in the foreseeable future, there will be no more RCA Living-Stereo releases in SACD, so grab this treasure while you still can.

This recording has achieved something of a cult status and that reputation can only be enhanced by this remastered version offering the performance in SACD format.

This series of Living Stereo SACD discs mostly offers 3 track surround sound spread across the three front speakers but there are also a few examples of two track recordings using the conventional left and right speakers only. This generally applies to the earliest stereo recordings of which this is one. The recording was actually made in 1954 and is here presented in two layers - standard stereo and SACD stereo. The SACD version is a remarkable achievement and it is close to impossible to credit that such sound quality could have been achieved at that time. The SACD version has greatly enhanced realism and depth as result of the processing involved in the re-mastering and is undoubtedly the version of choice.

As regards the interpretation, Rubinstein's collaboration with Reiner produces a truly memorable result which deserves to be ranked with the very best of those currently available, an obvious alternative of historic significance being that of Curzon with Szell on Decca, now remastered in 24 bits. Reiner with his excellent orchestra provide the same sort of authoritative accompaniment to the solo part that Szell provided for Curzon. Rubinstein, for his part, delivers an interpretation developed over 50 years of playing experience. This makes for a very special collaboration which was not pursued following on from a breakdown of relationships between Rubinstein and Reiner. Collectors therefore have to be content with this disc.

This SACD version of the recording is in limited supply and should be seriously considered by all collectors before stocks finally run out. Those with SACD playback facilities will find this to be a particularly impressive recording achievement that completely belies its age.

It is good to have Rubinstein's dazzling performance of Brahms first concerto on SACD. The sound quality is very natural and has incredible presence. Why can't today's technology do better than 50s' stereo recording?

The main reason for buying this disc is a) It's a Super Audio CD Stereo Hybrid so you get good sound and b) It's cheap.
The performance is very gutsy and exciting but there are too many places where Rubinstein fumbles his notes for my liking. The great one was never know for his 'accuracy' but always gave a good show. The trouble is that any imperfections are all too obvious with the high resolution sound (and the recording itself is exceptionally good despite its age).
This disc is a bit like seeing your favourtie celebs' wrinkles on High Definition TV.
