Daily Telegraph Classical CDs of the Year Independent on Sunday***** Sunday Times Classical CD of the Week Gramophone Editor s Choice 'this superb recital places Brahms back on his pedestal as one of the great lieder composers.' Hugh Canning, Classical CD of the Week, The Sunday Times, 11 February 2007, ***** 'Fink s voice is one of the loveliest to be heard today, at a time when there are many mezzo-sopranos of the very highest quality. She achieves an extraordinary intimacy in the recording studio, giving the impression that she is singing just for you as you listen at home. Harmonia Mundi s superb recording technique must, of course, take some credit for this, the balance with the marvellous piano-playing of Roger Vignoles being exceptionally true...Her singing of the glorious Die Mainacht is in itself enough reason to have this disc. What an artist!' Michael Kennedy, Sunday Telegraph, 18 February 2007 'For all the tragic, premature loss last year of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Argentinian Bernarda Fink is just one of a golden generation of mezzos vying for the mantle of Janet Baker. One of the most versatile, as at ease in Baroque repertoire as in music from Handel and Mozart to Schumann, Fink's rich, warm voice boasts the perfect blend of colour and clarity for this selection of 31 songs from the almost 200 Brahms wrote. Her musical intelligence combines with the sensitivity of Roger Vignoles to capture the folk-song spirit behind their urbane polish. Bernarda Fink has always been something of a connoisseur's singer, untouched by glossy promotional hype. This new Brahms recital confirms her credentials as a scrupulous, perceptive interpreter of Lieder. Her warm, glowing mezzo, flecked by darker, deeper tints, is lovely in itself. Beyond this, she sings each of these songs with unshowy eloquence and, abetted by the ever-discerning Roger Vignoles, an unerring feel for the curve and flux of Brahms's long-arched phrases. Other mezzos - Janet Baker, Christa Ludwig, Brigitte Fassbaender - have brought a more intense, impassioned style to the quintessentially Brahmsian songs of yearning and nostalgic regret. But Fink's refinement and relative restraint have their own rewards' Richard Wigmore, The Daily Telegraph, Saturday 10th March 2007

Review

Perf (5/5) ***** / Rec (4/5) **** State of the art Chopin from Tiberghien: Lucid beautifully poetic and excelling in the art of conveying heroic aspiration without bombast. His way with the mellow dreaminess of Brahms s Ballades impresses also. --Malcolm Hayes, BBC Music Magazine September 2013

I really adore these songs which are so beautifully sung on this recording. Roger Vignoles masterful accompaniment mirrors the lovely controlled singing of Ms Fink - thank you.

Suburb, sweet and distinctive voice. Tuneful and inventive songs by Brahms. A great partnership with Roger Vignoles whose playing complements but doesn't overshadow. Good clear sound and volume

Memorable, one of the best recordings I have of Brahms Lieder. A value add to any collection - as such I would recommend purchasing this CD.

A lovely match of voice and repertoire 28 Aug. 2009
By Santa Fe Listener - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I agree with the previous reviewers that this is a wonderful Brahms lieder recital, but perhaps for different reasons. Bernarda Fink's first acclaim came in Baroque music, and her style in the demanding repertoire of Schubert and Schumann struck me as a bit superficial. But she's a good fit for bahms because here her lightness of touch and lack of depth turn out to be virtues in disguise. Brahms can be too earnest in his songs, even when he wants to be frivolous, and many recitalists make heavy weather of selections that Fink fairly glides through. That's not a backhanded compliment. I think she knows exactly waht seh's about, and as much as I love Jessye Norman and Thomas Quasthoff in these songs, it's refreshing to hear an alternative approach. Vignobles is an accomplished accompanist, if not too long on personality.

Fine Brahms Songs 7 May 2007
By David G. Covell - Published on Amazon.com

This collection of many of Brahms' most popular songs is a wonderful listening experience, which I have been playing over and over. The piano accompaniments are a major part of the success of the disc and the singing is very finely nuanced. Die Mainacht is my favorite but all of the lieder are well done.

Somewhat disappointing. 13 Jun. 2013
By J. Snowden - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I found this singer plain-voiced and occasionally insecure. Better Brahms recitals are those of Fassbaender, Von Otter,Kirchschlager, Banse, Ameling and last but not least, the little known Ingeborg Danz. Brahms recitals to avoid are those of Cornelia Kallisch and the painful Julia Brian.
