The intentions behind this performance of Brahms' German Requiem are all good. On the face of it, the use of period instruments and an attempt to return to the style of playing of the day should result in something much closer to the original intentions of the composer. For me however, it only partially succeeds.
While I applaud Gardiner's attempt to remove some of the slushy sentimentalism that creeps into some performances of this work, I nevertheless feel that he has erred towards the opposite extreme. The entire performance sounds harsh and unemotional, almost mechanical at times. The Monteverdi Choir, who are normally superb in baroque and classical pieces, never seem to quite capture the spirit of this major romantic work.
Gardiner introduces unmarked emphasis' in both the first and fourth movements that I personally find extremely distracting. The tempi throughout are generally quite fast, which on the whole I quite enjoy, but again Gardiner seems to get completely carried away. The fugue at the end of the third movement and the "Denn es wird..." in the sixth movement both seem to suffer from this (although he isn't alone in preferring this tempo in the sixth movement).
This is not a "typical" performance of Brahms' German Requiem. The Klemperor and Naxos recordings both provide good paced tempi without loosing any of the emotional expression, while the Karajan and Previn interpretations might be more suited to those who like their requiems to be more sedate.

Superb recording by John Elliot Gardener of one of Brahms's masterpieces. I particularly like the 4th movement " how lovely are they dwellings".

I love this requiem and I've heard many versions of it. This version is very good. I prefer the Rudolf Kempe version with Fischer Dieskau.

Up there with the great recordings. This conductor and band never seem to disappoint.
