Product Description

Product Description

Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra present Brahms greatest choral work, the 'German' Requiem, featuring soprano Sally Matthews and baritone Christopher Maltman. Gergiev s first Brahms release on LSO Live, Symphonies Nos 1 & 2, Tragic Overture & Haydn Variations was awarded 5/5 by BBC Music Magazine. Intended to be for all humanity , Brahms 'German' Requiem is a powerful work its central themes of melancholy and comfort are universally applicable. Non-liturgical, yet sacred and devotional in spirit, it showcases the great romantic melodies for which Brahms was renowned, and has become a popular work with choirs all over the world admired for its mystical, consolatory and contemplative tone.

Review

Gergiev s epic, dark Russian approach presents the music s glorious harmonies and rich jewel tones. He gives the piece space and the choruses pack amazing punch. The trumpets are sharp and bright and the pace of it has the kind of drama that makes you feel as if you are hearing an opera, no surprise considering Gergiev s background. --The Buffalo News

The dark, veiled strings at the opening (Brahms with a slight Russian Orthodox accent?) are very impressive. So too is the sense of the first movement rising and falling steadily like a great arch. --BBC Music Magazine

Though it is a nice recording, there is one problem and it is the choir. To me the choir is simply not good enough to match the London Symphony orchestra. The sopranos of the choir have a lot of intonation problems and the voice often sounds pressed. Not that it is not rehearsed, but it seems the singers need kind of a selecting process and training. Sorry for my harsh opinion, but there are so many recordings of Brahms Requiem with good choirs that I am unable to review this differently. Otherwise Gergiev and the LSO are great, so I enjoy it. The score: 5 stars for Gergiev, 5 stars for the orchestra and 2 stars for the choir, which makes an average of 4stars.

Excellent recording of Brahms' most famous choral work! 10 May 2014
By Luukas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is fantastic reading of Brahms' sentimental and peaceful Requiem - Gergiev conducts warmly and both soloist are excellent. London Symphony Chorus' tone is rich and LSO plays magnificent. The recording quality (5.1 multichannel) is also very good. All in all, welcomed issue!
