Book Description

10 April 2014 Collector's Wodehouse

This volume reprints two of Wodehouse's earliest books which take the form of story sequences linked by a central character, a technique he used many times thereafter. Delightful in themselves, they are interesting chiefly as windows on a great writer's early evolution.

In The Man of Means, he looks forward to Bertie Wooster and Ukridge, but also back to his Victorian models, in a fantastic tale of the little man struggling with fate. When a humble clerk comes into a fortune, he embarks on a series of misadventures which suggest that wealth is not necessarily an unmixed blessing. Here we see signs of the satirical writer Wodehouse might have become, and the spirit of Chaplin is not far away.

More About the Author

The author of almost a hundred books and the creator of Jeeves, Blandings Castle, Psmith, Ukridge, Uncle Fred and Mr Mulliner, P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and educated at Dulwich College. After two years with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank he became a full-time writer, contributing to a variety of periodicals including Punch and the Globe. He married in 1914. As well as his novels and short stories, he wrote lyrics for musical comedies with Guy Bolton and Jerome Kern, and at one stage had five musicals running simultaneously on Broadway. His time in Hollywood also provided much source material for fiction. At the age of 93, in the New Year's Honours List of 1975, he received a long-overdue knighthood, only to die on St Valentine's Day some 45 days later.

Review

"Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in." (Evelyn Waugh)

"He exhausts superlatives" (Stephen Fry) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Book Description

In the Kid Brady tales, which bring together two early themes - boxing and the Englishman making his way in New York - we find Wodehouse learning how to present a hero who is at once touching, impressive and comic. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars For completists only? 7 Jan 2014
By Big Jim TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
There's a reason that this book and its accompanying volume The Swoop is towards the tail-end of the recent re-publishings by Everyman and that is because in the Wodehouse canon, that is their approximate rank. Written early in his career these stories follow the "careers" respectfully of Kid Brady, cowboy turned pugilist, and The Man of Means Roland Bleke, and whilst they offer some diverting entertainment I can't help feeling that my time would have been better spent re-reading Jeeves and Wooster or a Blandings novel. Having said that, they are very light reading so only take a few hours out of your life and it is moderately diverting looking for clues to characters and situations yet to come in Wodehouse's writing.
