Product Description

Product Description

At the turn of the 20th century the rail network extended to over 23,000 miles, very nearly the circumference of the world - the greatest length it was ever to achieve. Some urban routes had closed and later, hundreds of rural lines and stations succumbed to the Beeching axe. This map shows the network in its heyday before the decline commenced. Makes a perfect pair with 'Bradshaw's Handbook', also available from Old House.

Quality product 1 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This map shows the extent of the British and Irish railway system at its peak in 1907. It's well printed on good quality heavyweight paper and measures approx 24x38 inches and comes folded in a card sleeve which carries a very concise yet comprehensive history of Britain's railways and a brief biography of George Bradshaw. The map includes enlarged views of the railways in several major cities.

My only small criticism is that there is in places so much information crammed into a small area that it's difficult to read, but this may well be a fault of the original rather than the reproduction process. Overall a very useful and well produced facsimile and good value for money.

The map alongside, the earlier (in date), Bradshaw Railway Guide is very interesting. Though the map is very detailed, and therefore difficult to read in some areas, it provides a real insight in to what lines we have lost. Excellent productions, both Map and Guide.

Slightly overpriced being as it's only a reprint and would not have paid more than £5 for it had we seen it in a shop. However, I would say it makes a good companion with the Bradshaw's Great British Railways book.
