A fascinating insight into the railway system at the end of the 19th century. I was particularly interested in looking for details of services which ran in my old stamping ground of West Yorkshire and this book showed stations which I never even knew existed. A book full of nostalgia and one which the older of us railway enthusiasts will enjoy.

A top-quality reproduction of the whole text (including the advertisements, which are an interesting study in their own right). Inside the front cover is a half-page of "Editor's notes" to set the work in context - I would have liked to see a full-on Introduction, but given the format this would have been difficult, and in any case a dig around the Internet will supply all the information one could desire. Reproduction of the text is excellent throughout, probably giving better clarity than most of the original copies at the time. Great value for the price, too; and it really does give a good idea of how people in the 1890s must have felt when looking at "Bradshaw" themselves.

Why did you chose this rating?
As someone interested in railways it brought to life the past and how rail journies could be made.

I picked this up for some research I needed to do on a project. What we have here is a reprint of Bradshaw's guide to rail travel in Britain for 1895. There are pages of period advertisements, an index of stations, and of course all those timetables. This will probably appeal to RR fanatics only, but if you're into that, this may help satisfy your craving for scheduling details. The reproduction is quite good, though a few pages have the hint of looking like medium grade photocopies. And don't miss the 7:35 from Bosham.
