Book Description

20 Sep 2012
*As seen on Michael Portillo's BBC2 hit 'Great Continental Railway Journeys'!* Following its bestselling edition of 'Bradshaw's Handbook 1863', Old House brings you this fascinating guide to Europe's rail network on the very brink of the First World War. Published in 1913, it is divided into three sections: timetables for services covering the continent, short guides to each city and notable destination and features, and a wealth of advertisements and ephemeral materials concerning hotels, restaurants and services that might be required by the early twentieth century traveller by rail. It affords a fascinating glimpse of fin de siecle Europe and of a transport network that was shortly to be devastated by the greatest war the world had ever seen. *This highly collectable volume includes fold-out maps, a transparent protective jacket and a bookmarker!*

5.0 out of 5 stars Great European Railway Journeys 2 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover
This hefty tome, as austere and daunting as it looks, has to rank as one of the most outstanding works in the history of railway literature, here is something no well heeled traveller, in the death throes of genteel Edwardian England, could afford to be without, over the course of its 1106 pages, the traveller has everything at their fingertips they would ever need, a comprehensive guide of direct routes to the principle cities, railway timetable of each country of europe, a hotel directory, general advice to travellers, almanac & tide table, information on money, weights & measures, a short descriptive guide to each country and its principle cities and much much more, this is in my opinion another five star hit for old house who have given us an invaluable treasure, a snapshot of a bustling but genteel Europe who could have no idea of the horror that was waiting to unfold

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the ticket 13 Nov 2012

What an excellent book. It harks back to a golden age and is detailed with adverts for products some of which are still with us like Enos and Collis Brown's medecine. The adverts for the hotels are very evocative and the timetables transport you (sorry for the pun) to a different era. Hours of endless amusement in front of me. The surprise bonus are the pull out maps.

I was so jealous when Michael Portillo had this and I didn't. But now I have and I love it. So much fun. But, unless you have excellent eyesight, buy a magnifying glass too!
