Product Description

Review

'Congratulations to [Old House] on republishing this, which is the most important source book for all canal historians. And at such a low price too - only £15 - which is only a fraction of the amount I paid for my copy twenty years ago from a second-hand book shop in Falmouth.' --Peter Brown, Railway & Canal Historical Society

Product Description

***From the publisher of the bestselling 'Bradshaw's Handbook 1863'*** After the success of its pioneering guidebooks to the railways of Great Britain, the Bradshaw enterprise continued its exploration of the nation's countryside and transport links in this companion to the waterways of England and Wales. The author, Henry Rodolph de Salis, was a Director of the Fellows, Morton & Clayton Canal Carriers, and this book was the fruit of eleven years spent cataloguing the network. It not only offers a comprehensive view of the routes and uses of the waterways themselves but also a brief history of the system and the technologies involved in its running, as well as some fascinating insights into the types of companies that used it to transport their goods. First published in 1904, it is an indispensable guide to a transport network that was central to Georgian and Victorian industry and is a heritage treasure to this day.

I decided to write a few words about this book for a specific reason.
This is well produced facsimle of the original, worth five stars without doubt. Having seen an original I knew what to expect. It then occurred to me that some people pondering whether to buy this book may have been attracted to it because of the extremely popular railway guide by Bradshaw as use by Michael Portillo in the BBC series Great British Railway Journeys, full of historical facts and descriptive text of what to see: this book is absolutely nothing like that.
The book is mainly made up of pages and pages of detail of mileage between locks, dimensions of boats that can use a particular waterway etc. There is a short description of the traffic working the waterway, who owns it and where the headquarters are etc.At the back of the book there are a few advertisments and a glossary of terms used.
The value of this book is really the deatails it gives of waterways that are long gone.
To sum up then, an excellent book at a great price from Amazon and of great value to canal historian but if you're looking to find a church of interest or any other canalside location of interest, buy a modern canal guide or map. This is a hard facts and figures book of the canals and waterways as they were in 1904, not a tourists guide book.

Not what I expected 25 April 2012

Having recently bought the facsimile of Bradshaw's Railways, I expected this book would be similar. It is very different and at first I wondered if I had made a mistake in buying it. But on delving into it, I found it really interesting and contains a wealth of information on the canals that were still in use (or just about) at the turn of the 20th century. The author was in commercial transport using the canals.

I have found that finding a particular canal is not always easy, as in many cases the names have changed or they are grouped under the then ownership i.e. The GWR. So a little perseverance/browsing is required.

As a reference book for anyone interested in canals or their history it should be a must.
