I decided to write a few words about this book for a specific reason.
This is well produced facsimle of the original, worth five stars without doubt. Having seen an original I knew what to expect. It then occurred to me that some people pondering whether to buy this book may have been attracted to it because of the extremely popular railway guide by Bradshaw as use by Michael Portillo in the BBC series Great British Railway Journeys, full of historical facts and descriptive text of what to see: this book is absolutely nothing like that.
The book is mainly made up of pages and pages of detail of mileage between locks, dimensions of boats that can use a particular waterway etc. There is a short description of the traffic working the waterway, who owns it and where the headquarters are etc.At the back of the book there are a few advertisments and a glossary of terms used.
The value of this book is really the deatails it gives of waterways that are long gone.
To sum up then, an excellent book at a great price from Amazon and of great value to canal historian but if you're looking to find a church of interest or any other canalside location of interest, buy a modern canal guide or map. This is a hard facts and figures book of the canals and waterways as they were in 1904, not a tourists guide book.
