Product Description

Product Description

The 1948 Ashes series in Britain was quite unique. The Australian team under Donald Bradman went through the whole summer – county matches as well as Tests – undefeated. Of the five-match Test series they won four and drew the fifth. Hence, and indisputably, the “Invincibles”. It was to be Bradman’s swansong as a Test player: but without the appropriate golden farewell, as he was bowled for a duck at the Oval in his last Test innings of all. Roland Perry’s book is a comprehensive account of the whole tour, match by match, as this remarkable side – featuring great bowlers like Lindwall and Miller as well as batting maestros like Bradman – moved around the country from county to county, conquering all before them. The Test matches, though none went England’s way, were epic contests between great players on both sides – England’s Denis Compton, Len Hutton and Godfrey Evans just some of the great sportsmen on show. As well as absorbing match reports, Perry also supplies profiles of every player on both sides to have played in the Test series. Published in time for the eagerly-awaited 2009 Ashes series – the first for England under Kevin Pietersen’s captaincy, and coming after the previous Australian whitewash in 2007 – Bradman’s Invincibles is the definitive account of a remarkable sports team. Roland Perry is the author of, among many books, the authorised biography of Keith Miller (also published by Aurum), and a biography of Michael Straight. He lives in Melbourne, Australia.

A book of two halves 12 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
The first half of the book is a decent enough history of the 1948 tour, but the second half is a list of encyclopedia-style entries for each of the players involved - both the Australians and English players. They were frankly a waste of space. I'd have much rather had that information included in the main text, which would help to set the context background to the tour. And if the info doesn't help do that, it's irrelevant - so get rid of it! Not a patch on other similar titles like Bodyline Autopsy.

As a very keen cricketer who has broken his leg in the first weekend of cricket season I was thrilled to be offered this book by a friend to keep my spirits up and my thoughts on the pitch whilst I'm incapacitated!

First to the style of the author, this book is very well and eloquently written obviously by someone with great passion for the subject and a deep understanding built up through a good relationship with the Don himself. Even the descriptions of the various matches in the 1948 tour of the British isles are varied enough to keep the readers interest. A word of warning here though, someone without good cricket knowledge may find these descriptions a bit on the tedious side but quite why you would buy this book without a cricketing interest is beyond me!

Outside of the cricketing descriptions there is a lot of interest in what great Britain looked and felt like post war, again obviously well researched and informative. And a little note for aberdonians and Aberdeenshire cricket club members there is a nice wee description of a hard fought match between Scotland and Australia at mannofield where bradman scored his last hundred on British soil!

Overall a great read, though my interest did start to waiver a bit when the tour was over and the book went into descriptions of each individual that took part, some repetition here. Excellent otherwise.

Christmas book 28 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
Excellent buy of a unique record of the 'invincibles' tour, leaning heavily on Don Bradman's own memories. Might have benefitted from tour statistics in the usual tabular form (tests and all first class games).
