As a very keen cricketer who has broken his leg in the first weekend of cricket season I was thrilled to be offered this book by a friend to keep my spirits up and my thoughts on the pitch whilst I'm incapacitated!
First to the style of the author, this book is very well and eloquently written obviously by someone with great passion for the subject and a deep understanding built up through a good relationship with the Don himself. Even the descriptions of the various matches in the 1948 tour of the British isles are varied enough to keep the readers interest. A word of warning here though, someone without good cricket knowledge may find these descriptions a bit on the tedious side but quite why you would buy this book without a cricketing interest is beyond me!
Outside of the cricketing descriptions there is a lot of interest in what great Britain looked and felt like post war, again obviously well researched and informative. And a little note for aberdonians and Aberdeenshire cricket club members there is a nice wee description of a hard fought match between Scotland and Australia at mannofield where bradman scored his last hundred on British soil!
Overall a great read, though my interest did start to waiver a bit when the tour was over and the book went into descriptions of each individual that took part, some repetition here. Excellent otherwise.
