Book Description

In the early days of the First World War two volunteer Pals Battalions were raised in Bradford and this is their remarkable story. David Raw's account is based on memoirs, letters, diaries, contemporary newspaper reports, official records and archives, and it is illustrated with many maps and previously unpublished photographs. He recaptures the heroism and stoical humour displayed by the Bradford Pals in the face of often terrible experiences, but he also recounts the tragedy, pain, suffering and grief that was the dark side of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written and researched 2 Nov. 2014
Format:Paperback
This is a well-written and well-annotated history of the 16th, 18th and 20th (Service) Battalions of the West Yorks Regt that can sit quite happily alongside other books in Pen & sword's Pals' series. My edition is the paperback one and I wish I'd invested in the hardback. The only thing missing here are the nominal rolls but it's a small quibble and there is a roll of the 16th which has been reproduced from a contemporary newspaper. Let their sacrifice not be forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bradford Pals by David Raw 25 Sept. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This work is one of the best books that I have ever read that relates to World War One
The author David Raw intermingles historical fact and the lives of the Bradford Combatants together with a history of the City of Bradford into what amounts into a fascinating account of the events that occurred from the beginning of the twentieth century to the demise of the final Bradford Pal.
There is also reference to the other Pals Battalions particularly those raised in the North of England which enhances the work even further
Do not do anything until you have ordered and read this book, it ia an historical masterpiece particularly for those with an interest of the City of Bradford and of its inhabitants both past and present
A great job by David Raw
