Book Description

1 Mar 2011
Until now, the man whose racing cars have won more victories than anyone else's, and whose design skills have brought fame to hundreds of drivers and made champions of a good many of them, has remained in the background. Ron Tauranac - British-born, but brought up in Australia - always preferred to let his cars sing his praises where it really mattered - on the race tracks of the world. They have never been known as Tauranacs, but the names Brabham and Ralt will be very familiar to anyone who has followed motor racing since the Sixties. And so, of course, is Honda, the company which supplied the engines for some of Tauranac's most successful Brabham and Ralt racing cars and with which he still retains close links as a design consultant, working behind the scenes on several of their motor racing activities.

Product Description

Review

Consider Tauranac's achievements and it dawns that a biography of this British-born, Aussie-raised designer is long overdue. And this 256-page effort is well worthy of the role, giving a fascinating insight into what makes this publicity-shy genius tick. A fine tribute and excellent value. -- Classic & Sportscar, June 1999 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

Ron Tauranac has never craved the limelight, preferring to let his cars do the talking for him on the track, but this overdue biography finally reveals the remarkable and at times prickly character behind all the successes. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An overdued and welcome newcomer to my library 6 May 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This revealing book is a must for formula car fans with more than passing recollections. It provides an educational outting into the world of open-wheel race car productions. Virtually anybody who was somebody in racing the last 40 years made an appearance here, not to mention the upstarts of the who's who of today's GP drivers. Some of the quotes are not flattering, but then such candid statements have made this book a trustworthy piece of jounalism, which is rare these days. Because of the paucity of published work on Ron Tauranac, Mike Lawrence by merely penning a book on Ron would have earned my gratitude. But Mike did not settle for anything less than his best efforts here. Somehow I got the feeling that this could well be the first and last word on Ron, and Mike just made sure that he got it righ for posterity.. Don't look for glossies here, but if you are looking to learn the truths of who, why, and when, then you will not go wrong here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Mike Lawrence classic. 21 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The title of this book merely scratches the surface of its subject matter. Ron Tauranac has designed racing cars for over forty years and Lawrence's superb book documents his work (particularly with Brabham and his own Ralt firm) in detail, with all the insight, perception and depth of research we have come to expect. As usual, the book is rich in anecdote and highly readable. Considered alone, it is a superb biography of one of the pivotal figures in motor sport. When taken in conjunction with Lawrence's earlier works on March and Reynard, it forms part of an even richer history of racers and racing culture in Britain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 23 Feb 2012
By Ari K
Format:Paperback
This book was very interesting reading to me. It is mostly written from personal and business viewpoint of racing car engineering and production. In the 1980s I was myself a little bit involved in maintaining a couple of Ralt cars, as well as some Judd/Brabham engines. I was happy to see that the information and opinions in this book regarding these very much reflect my memories too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interested in a true Legend? 7 Jan 2013
By Geoff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A great tale of a true Champion person in Ron Tauranac - the brains behind so many fabulous racing cars. If you enjoy historic open wheel race cars, this is a 'must read'. So many big names from today & yesterday owe such a large part if their success to this remarkable, but eccentric, designer.

Ron Tauranac was the best designer or formula cars ever. There has not been one model that was not a race winner. When you read the book, you will also notice the large number of other good designers that became famous after working with him. You will also notice the number of great drivers that drove his cars. This is a great book about the greatest designer.

Fascinating story about Ron Tauranac's career designing and building race cars and his interactions with Jack Brabham and other figures in the racing world. It did help that I'm an old formula racing fan and frustrated driver/mechanic.
