Product Description

Review

'Boys at War is a minor classic of the Other Ranks' war' Daily Mail 'This vivid story tells of just a few individuals... But in its meticulous accuracy and totally honest recall ... it paints a picture far more real than any history book or idealised film could do' Manchester Evening News 'He describes himself as an ordinary working-class lad from Lancashire, but there was nothing ordinary about the courage he and his comrades displayed night after night over occupied Europe ... This is a fascinating wartime memoir that deserves a wide readership.' Mail on Sunday 'Amid the plain prose he produces arresting images ... His candour increases one's admiration for him.' Guardian.

Gunners at play 17 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book mainly for my father who was a tail gunner, rather than mid gunner, in 115 squadron but he assures me the training described is exactly as he remembers.
As I read the book to him, his sight not being good these days, each chapter sparks more memories and he can't wait for the next visit and chapters.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience what it was like in bomber command during WW2

Great 11 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Gripping read, couldn't put the book down. Gave to many friends to read. Very insteresting story, nice touch at the end - revisiting the people the writer met during his ordeal. Highly recommend.

Excellent true story 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The story of how this young airman was trained in WW2, flew bomber missions and was eventually shot down and captured is fascinating. The story of the prison camp and his eventful return home gives you a real idea of life in Occupied Europe and the chaotic conditions as the war there drew to a close.

Have bought this copy because so many people borrowed my first one that I needed a replacement!
