4.0 out of 5 stars Moral Dilemma 22 Mar 2013
By LME - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a short story, rather than historical fiction. There is a historical backdrop; coastal Ireland, smuggler/Crown conflict with American overtones, and boating/naval life. But the big story is about Patrick, who lost his father and mother at a young age, and was raised by an unkind Grandfather who is in the smuggling trade. Because it is a short story the background detail to Patrick's dilemma is spare, just enough to propel the storyline forward to Patrick's opportunity. He is able to make a daring stand for what he believes is right and leave behind what has harmed his emotional health and inner conscience. A "coming of age" is accomplished.

At 41 pages the pace is brisk. Because Patrick explores his moral dilemma I think it is best as an independent read for grades 4 to 6/7 and as a read-aloud to grades 2-5. The story is well-crafted and would incite much discussion if read-aloud to a group of middle-schoolers. I only wish it were a little longer and fleshed out so I could have formed a stronger attachment to Patrick and his situation.
