Product Description

Elliot Tittensor (TV s Shameless) stars as Daz in headlining film PROTECT ME FROM WHAT I WANT, a gripping British film debut that sees him woo a young lad in an underpass, only to be threatened with a break-up the following morning. Passive and submissive roles are tackled and tugged in gay graffiti tale VANDALS and Icelandic grapple-fest WRESTLING, while POSTMORTEM, MY NAME IS LOVE, and Iris Prize winner STEAM look at promising encounters that turn awry.

Rounding out the collection are HEIKO, an alternative ode to foot fetishes, BREATH where 12 year old Erik swims out to sea to make a daring move on his best friend s father, and the crème de la crème from this collection TREVOR, which won multiple prestigious awards from Sundance, Teddy Berlinale and even The Academy Awards (Oscar) for Best Short Film.

Steam Dir. Eldar Rapaport (USA) 15mins Winner of the Iris Prize 2009 - Starring Julien Zeitouni, Scott Hislop

Moving between anxiety, reflection and fear, two strangers try to make sense of their predicament...stuck in a steam room. Heat increasing, they need to get out but can't find the door. What is this place and how did they get here?

Protect Me From What I Want Dir. Dominic Leclerc (UK) 14mins - Starring Elliott Tittensor, Naveed Choudhury

Daz is looking for love. Saleem is looking for sex. Cruising at an underground archway, these two worlds collide. Back at Daz' bedsit, Saleem embarks on a dangerous, thrilling sexual adventure. Both characters disparate worlds overlap and collide to tell a tale of loneliness and longing in a city late at night.

Heiko Dir. David Bonneville (Portugal) 13mins - Starring Jaime Freitas, José Manuel Mendes

A carefree young man really puts his foot in it with his obsessive lover.

Postmortem Dir. Eldar Rapaport (USA) 16mins - Starring Murray Bartlett, Daniel Dugan

Romanticized as a fruit of desire and imagination, Postmortem plays out as a fleeting moment between two men who briefly reunite to reminisce and unload.

My Name Is Love Dir. David Färdmar (Sweden) 20mins - Starring Adam Lundgren, Jonas Rimeika

Love and Sebastian meet each other by a coincidence on a hot Swedish summer night. They happen to share the same secret, but their encounter is going to cause severe consequences for both of them - Special Mention, Iris Prize

Wrestling Dir. Grimur Hakonarson (Iceland) 21mins - Starring Halldór Gylfason, Björn Ingi Hilmarsson

Denni and Einar both practice the sport of Icelandic wrestling, which allows them to escape their daily routine, to express their true selves. Yet little do the wrestling spectators know, the men harbour a secret passion for each other. - Official Selection, Sundance Film Festival

Vandals Dir. Simon Steuri (Germany / Switzerland) 17mins - Starring Jonas Ullmann, Nils Althaus

The difficult balancing of two young graffiti artists trying to live their love without betraying what is closest to their heart: painting.

Trevor Dir. Peggy Rajski (USA) 23mins - Starring Brett Barsky, Cory Miller, Judy Kain

Trevor is a film that deals with the very real issue of one's self worth in the eyes of the people that matter in your life. It takes a sensitive yet blunt approach to suicide. It deals with a young boy's thoughts about his sexuality at a very important stage of his life. There s a little bit of Trevor in all of us. With a soundtrack featuring a bevy of songs from Diana Ross, Trevor is an uplifting and fulfilling cinematic experience. - Winner Academy Award (Oscar), Winner Teddy Award Berlin

The latest in the (generally worthy) 'Boys on Film' series is a diverse, yet fairly inconsistent, collection of shorts.

STEAM (two 30-something strangers trapped in a steam room) and HEIKO (a possessive older lover goes to unexpected lengths to maintain the relationship) are each notable for their respective twists-in-the-tale, although sadly neither are sufficiently strong otherwise. POSTMORTEM (sparks fly when two ex-lovers meet up for coffee) and WRESTLING (a grim affair between two Icelandic middle-aged wrestlers) are both pedestrian and forgettable. VANDALS (two teenage graffiti artists in a tempestuous relationship) is potentially interesting, but feels weak in comparison to the feature-length treatment given to this concept in James Bolton's The Graffiti Artist.

Fortunately, the mediocrity of the above five are balanced out by the remaining four, each of which has something to offer.

TREVOR, of course, is now a classic (from 1994): set in the early 80s, a 13-year-old Diana Ross fan feels isolated after he develops a crush on the school jock; the haunting quality of this film really lies in the way enduringly painful passions are wrapped in a black-comedy coating. PROTECT ME FROM WHAT I WANT is a neat portrayal of the hesitant fumblings and uncertain steps in embarking on new experiences for two teenage males from differing socio-cultural backgrounds. MY NAME IS LOVE offers a well-acted, dark and intense drama in which a virginal literature student hooks up with a stranger and encounters more than he expected. Finally, mention must be made of the exquisite BREATH (aka Zucht); a (long-overdue) courageously authentic short film, beautifully portraying a 12-year-old male's attraction to his friend's father.

Overall, a very eclectic mix, but well worth owning for TREVOR and BREATH alone - two films which lift this international collection up from a potential three stars to the awarded four stars.

Special Features are limited to a photo gallery and trailers.

A must have 9 May 2010
Format:DVD
Oh Lordy, where to begin? Okay so everyone knows that Shameless totty Elliot Tittensor gets his kecks off and goes gay in headline film 'Protect Me From What I Want', and it's one of the main standout films, however there's eight other films in here that mustn't be missed. 'Trevor' is a well known gay short that won an Oscar and has a great Diana Ross soundtrack. Swedish film 'My Name Is Love' has a very powerful message and is quite explicit - not easy viewing but essential. Lots of great little shorts here coming to about two hours in total length. A real bargain compared to other short film compilations which only have about 5 or 6 (like the ones in America)

This is the first time I've dipped my toes into one of the Boys On Film collections, and frankly I only got hold of this DVD to see Elliott Tittensor making out with a boy- but beyond this very pleasing incident, it's actually a very pleasing collection of international, sensual and emotive short films, with some absolute gems included.

The general theme for this collection is desires, which makes this collection incredibly emotive; including the title film 'Protect Me From What I Want', the British film in the collection, which is incredibly simple in it's writing and direction, but wonderfully and powerfully effective. It however, isn't the standout film in this collection.

For me, the standout film is 'Vandals', a Swiss-German film with incredibly simplistic dialogue and wonderful imaginary and filmography work- it's powerful in it's message and story without trying too hard to be artist.

I'm also a massive fan of 'Heiko', a Portuguese film with a twisted plotline and is almost a silent film in the sense that the actions speak louder than words, and also of 'Breath', with is lovely and touching- again it takes the silent film approach which makes the viewing even more effective.

Alongside these gems are 'Trevor', 'Postmortem' and 'My Name Is Love'- each of which holds a certain amount of charm, all wonderfully shot and penned and each are as though-provoking as the next. In particular, 'Trevor' holds a certain level of excellent wonderment about it; it's gloriously written and darkly funny, and 'My Name Is Love' is dangerously gripping and emotively moving, and is incredible in the way it is played out, with outstanding acting.

Of course, with the highs come the lows- I really failed to connect with 'Wrestling', despite how wonderfully shot it was, and 'Steam', which feels completely lost in this collection of films, although it does have a pretty clever twist to it's story!

On the whole, I was very impressed with this collection- poignant, moving and incredibly thought provoking- it's a definite must for anyone who is a fan of decent quality, artistic and independent short-films.

Poor.
Not as good as number 2 (or 6).

Awful Diana Ross music which always makes me feel sick. Loads of unwanted advertizing on disc.

A miserable collection.
