I first bought this book because i liked the front cover. it was all blues and greens and drew my eye immediately; but the story inside was so much more than the cover suggested. From the opening scene in which a young Cory Mackenson witnesses a car plunge into the lake of his home town you are drawn in as surely as that car is sucked into the deep. That single event has ramifications that echo throughout Cory's life and spark off a murder mystery that makes him doubt the very safety of his hometown. His father, who also witnessed the tragedy, is haunted by visions of the dead man he tried to save, and is caught in a battle of his own against these demons. Cory himself is going through his own rites of passage as he discovers the truth of the mystery and grows up with his friends. It is the friendship between Cory and his friends that really effected me; these are real boys, full of eagerness and youth and fantasies, and the events that change them and weather them, broke my heart. I wanted them to stay young and innocent and carefree forever, but that isnt life, and this story reminds you of that.
The way the townsfolk are described with such detail is also a favourite element of this book, with the naked son of the town Fat Cat and old mr. lightfoot my personal favourites.
The story of the murder mystery, once it actually unfolds, is clever and effecting and stayed with me for some time, with the things that were hinted at the most haunting of all.
This book is beautiful and intriguing and i would love for everyone to discover its magic. You will not regret taking the chance and reading this wonderful story, there are not enough words to honour it.
