Reviews

In Falls City, Nebraska, Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank) arrives to start a new future for himself. The local community falls for his charms and everyone becomes drawn to his innocence and wit. However, behind the charming persona is a totally different person - Brandon is actually a woman. After falling for a local karaoke singer (Chloe Sevigny), Brandon moves in with her family and wins them over. But when Brandon's secret is finally out, the rest of the family all turn against him, branding him sick and evil. Hilary Swank won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance.

What I have to say about this film won't take very long at all!
It is absolutly wonderful. A masterpiece. Superb acting, great cast.
The story centers around a young girl who says she isn't gay as she feels like she is a man. She dresses as one, acts like one and even puts a sock in a certain place to complete her look.
Then she meets a femine (Chloe) girl who is in a destructive relationship and they soon fall in love.
The sex scenes are mild but important. And the tragic ending when the ex-boyfriend finds out is so realistic.
This fact based story of forbidden love, confused sexuality, heart break, love and revenge is so wonderfully and realistically portrayed that even the most insensitive person could not fail to cry at the end.
Wonderful dark and magical stuff

I think it is strange that in the 'customers who bought this also bought...' box all the films are lesbian titles. at the time of the film's release, and since the DVD release, this has been classified as a gay/lesbian interest film. this, however, does not do the film justice at all. Giving it such a definition as 'gay/lesbian interest' does not give it justice at all: anyone who enjoys thoughtful, romantic films will fall in love with Boys Don't Cry regardless of their sexuality. This is a truly brilliant film, one of the most underrated of the 90s. Hilary Swank is excellent as Teena Brandon, but to me the most compelling performance was that of Chloe Sevigny. Her's is the most complex character, confused by her love for Brandon. She plays her character beautifully, and you will find it hard to tear your eyes away from her whenever she is on screen. the scene where brandon makes love to her is painfully emotional, almost hard to watch at times. The song by The Cure, 'Boys Don't Cry' is one of the best pop songs ever, and completes an almost perfect film.
Will change your perception of human relationships forever.

this is a brilliant and very emotinal film about a young girl that feels more comfortable being male, she dresses and acts like a man and does everything she can to try and fit in with her male friends. a relationship begins to develop between her and on of her male friends ex-girlfriends (chloe) and they soon fall in love. this is a tragic story and is so true to life its almost scary. the ending to the film is upsetting on so many levels and had me crying for hours after it had finished. one of the best films i have ever seen. i would recomend it to anyone.

I watched this film for the second time the other day having seen it several years ago. It still had as much of an impact on me as it did the first time. Shocking, compelling, moving, flawlessly acted by Swank and Sevigny who both gain immediate respect from the audience with their tender performances. Swank is entirely convincing and utterly fasciniating in this role.

I was prompted to write this review after reading one stating that the movie was 'slow' and 'drags on'. I feel this is unfair comment. I have never been so captivated by a film. I cannot stop thinking about it.

A must watch.

i watched this with my friend and i really enjoyed the film. i was immediately drawn into the film and couldn't wait to see what happened but when i saw what happened i was so moved i cried, probably the first film which has moved me in this way. it's a very powerful film, very moving and i would definately recommend you to watch it. it is shocking but unfortunately based upon a true story which makes it more sad and moving. if you get chance to watch it, do! you'll probably need a box of tissues as well!

From the beginning to the end you are hooked on the true story of Brandon. You get excited at the fact that he can be who he wants but then let down and frustrated as he continues to lie to people, yet you can understand his fears as the conciquences are displayed. And by the end you are in floods of tears and dismayed, but don't let that stop you as it is a film that just simply cannot be missed.

After applauding Hilary Swank's Best Actress Academy Award for her role in MILLION DOLLAR BABY, I thought I'd better rent BOYS DON'T CRY, for which Swank also received an Oscar. Where have I been that I haven't seen it until now?
Here, Swank plays Teena Brandon, a 21-year old woman with female genitalia but the sexual inclinations of a male. Ultimately, she'd like a sex change. In the meantime, she cuts her hair short, wraps up her breasts, pads the crotch of her jeans, renames herself Brandon Teena, and sets out to pick-up chicks. Now, in my corner of the world - Southern California - one could pull this off with panache. Trouble is, Brandon lives in Nebraska, and she eventually runs afoul of a couple of good ol' boys, John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Tom (Brandon Sexton), the former being the erstwhile boyfriend of Lana (Chloe Sevigny), the girl with whom Brandon develops a love relationship. The violence John and Tom eventually visit upon Brandon/Teena gives your average bigot a bad name, and reminds me why Nebraska is Flyover Country, especially when it's not pigskin season and the locals don't have Cornhusker football to keep them occupied. (Ok, ok. I admit I'm being unfair to Nebraska. After all, I'm not from Oklahoma and a Sooner fan.)
Swank's role in BOYS DON'T CRY is, in many ways, grittier and incorporates more extremes of emotion than that in MILLION DOLLAR BABY. At times, I winced and slowly sunk down in my seat, much as I did as I watched Charlize Theron's bravura performance in MONSTER, and MILLION DOLLAR BABY never elicited that reaction. Here, Hilary elevates what might otherwise be a 3 or 4-star soap opera about the lives of trailer trash to 5-star heights.
The sad part is that BOYS DON'T CRY is based on a true story.
