Product Description

CD Description

Recorded in Cortney Tidwell’s home and her friends’ homes and co-produced by Tidwell, her husband Todd Tidwell and Ryan Norris, Boys is, like its predecessor, an astonishingly eclectic and genre-defying mix of the many musical forms that have inspired her. It owes as much to Depeche Mode and Joy Division as it does to Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash, and as much, if not more, to Great Britain as to The Grand Ole Opry. It’s all held together by Cortney’s extraordinary voice: athletic and graceful, as capable of immaculate innocence as banshee wails, and equipped with an irrefutable ability to strike right to the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Can't stop listening! 31 July 2009
By Eden
Format:Audio CD
Can't believe this woman isn't all over the papers instead of La Roux and all those other dull plastic fake-indie pop stars. Boys is even better than her last album, and its even more varied. She does electronic stuff - (the single Watusii is awesome and the video's brilliant too), indie pop, country, folk, noise pop and there's even one song that sounds a little like an R&B track. The duet with Jim James from My Morning Jacket is incredible, too. Plus the last song Oh Suicide is probably the saddest song ever recorded. I almost cried the first time I heard it. Buy this! Don't trust the media! They're probably too dumb to understand anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderfully eclectic album by a superb talent 22 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
There are some albums which reward the listener with every play, revealing new sounds, nuances and melodies. Cortney Tidwell's second album is just one of them. The palate of styles introduced by her first album, Don't Let The Stars Keep us Tangled Up, is expanded further here, producing an album that sounds like Bjork, Loretta Lyn and Liz Fraser got drunk one weekend with a box of classic songs & 70s synthesizers, then invited Brian Eno and My Bloody Valentine over for a jam. Tidwell's vocal talents have never been in doubt, but the breadth of this album really allows her versatility to shine through - it's been a long time since such a wide range of vocal styles has been heard on a single album. 'Watusii', a cracking fizzball of ethereal upbeat electropop, was a great choice for the first single to be released from the album (the video is also superb! - check it out online) but for me the stand-out track is 'Solid State' - a smouldering bluesy epic that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the soundtrack of Twin Peaks.

A definite contender for Album Of The Year.
